Chapter 32 The Call That Wouldn’t Go Through

After clearing things up with Adriel, Wynette felt much lighter. Her mood improved right away.

She had no idea that Noah had been trying to reach her all day. He couldn’t get through, and he was close to losing his temper.

At the hospital, when he heard the doctor mention Lorelei’s allergy, he suddenly remembered that Wynette was allergic to grapes.

He had forgotten all about it.

At lunch, he even asked Wynette to drink wine.

Now it all came back to him. Wynette hadn’t looked well back in the meeting. Her face was pale.

There had also been a large rash on her neck. Just thinking about it now made Noah uneasy.

He picked up his phone and tried to check on her.

The call wouldn’t go through.

His face turned cold. He called his assistant. “Check Wynette’s hospital records for today.”

If her allergy was that bad, she must have gone to the hospital.

Behind him, Lorelei heard everything. A flash of jealousy and resentment passed through her eyes.

“Noah.” She quickly hid her emotions and walked over to him.

Noah ended the call and looked at her pale face. “Are you still feeling unwell?”

Lorelei gave a soft smile. “I’m fine now. If you’re worried about Wynette, you should go see her. I’m sorry. Because of me, things got so complicated between you two.”

Her eyes turned red, filled with guilt.

Noah felt a sharp pang of sympathy. “It’s not your fault. We just haven’t been communicating well. She’s still upset. I’ll go talk to her tonight.”

Even now, he thought Wynette was just angry with him.

He realized that he hadn’t seen her much lately. And the few times they did meet, things didn’t go well.

But it hadn’t always been like this.

Noah opened their chat. The last message on the screen was the one he had sent.

his

The one tick on the screen stung eyes.

He scrolled up. Most of the messages were from Wynette.

Some were about work. Some were just her sharing little things from her day.

Each time, she sent a dozen messages. And he would reply with just one.

Most of his replies were under ten words.

Sometimes just “yeah” or “okay.”

The more he scrolled, the worse he felt. Now he couldn’t even reach her. It left a strange, heavy feeling in his chest.

Lorelei noticed what he was doing. She pushed down her discomfort and spoke gently, “If you need help, just tell me. I can explain things to Wynette for you.

“Noah, I don’t want to be the reason you two keep arguing. But you’ve really changed. Your temper is much better now.”

She smiled at him. “Back when we were together, I was always the one who gave in first when we argued. Now I see you being patient with Wynette, I can’t help but feel a little jealous.

“You were the one who told me, don’t spoil a woman too much in a relationship, or she’ll push her limits. But you’ve changed so much for Wynette. Honestly, I’m glad to see it.”

As she spoke, her expression slowly turned dim.

Noah looked at her.

The sadness she tried to hide made his already heavy mood sink even lower.

Back when Lorelei was dating Noah, he really did act like a spoiled rich kid. He made her give in to him all the time.

He had to admit it–after she left, he finally started to reflect. Little by little, his temper changed.

Now that Lorelei brought up the past, a heavy sense of guilt rose in his chest.

His voice turned hoarse. “Lorelei, let me take you home.”

No matter what he said, it couldn’t undo the hurt from before.

Noah didn’t want to dwell on the past anymore.

Lorelei just nodded. “Okay. Thanks.”

The moment their eyes met, she knew she had made the right bet.
