Chapter 31 The First Lesson in Power
Adriel’s expression grew more serious as Wynette remained silent. “Wynette.”
She looked up and met his eyes.
He met her gaze and spoke calmly, “There are some things we need to talk about.”
Adriel was the one who brought up marriage. Even if it was just a contract, it still had to look real.
Sensing how serious he was, Wynette straightened her back. “Go ahead.”
She knew her words had drawn a clear line between them. It probably upset him.
That much was obvious.
But she had her own principles.
Adriel didn’t know what she was thinking.

He glanced at Wynette and realized he had been too harsh. His expression turned slightly awkward. “About getting married, I’ve asked you more than once. Have you really thought it through?”
When Wynette called him earlier, he already knew Noah had stood her up again for Lorelei.
Just like the last two times, she had waited at City Hall from morning to evening. Noah never showed.
Adriel told her he wouldn’t be back for a week because he wanted to give her time to think it through before getting married to him.
During that time, she kept stressing she was sure. That she wanted to marry him. But was she really sure?
Wynette looked at the man in front of her, confused.
She thought Adriel was acting strange. He kept asking if she had really thought things through.
He was the one who suggested marriage, and she had agreed. So what was he really thinking?
She couldn’t figure it out.
Wynette looked away and said, “I don’t understand what you mean.”
She didn’t like a guessing game.
And right now, she didn’t have the energy to figure out what was going on in his head. It was better to just ask.
She didn’t know him well. Most of what she knew about him came from what other people said. To her, the best way to deal with this was simple–just be honest and say everything clearly.
So she did.
Adriel answered honestly, “I told you before. One reason I chose you is to deal with my family’s pressure to

get married.”

He paused, then looked at her again. “If you’re married to me but still keep a distance, what do you think my family will say? What about other people?”
He looked at her steadily. “Wynette, I need a wife who can act like we’re a loving couple anytime. Not someone people can see through as just a partner in a deal.”
He was being very direct.
Since she chose to marry him, there was no way they could keep everything separate.
If she kept thinking like this, being around each other would get exhausting.
Adriel already had enough to deal with at work, and his family paid close attention to him at home.
If he also had to “act” all the time with Wynette, then what was the point of getting married?
Wynette understood what he meant. She wanted to explain that she hadn’t meant it that way.
But before she could speak, Adriel cut in, “You want to take over Jewell Group and carry that responsibility. With the way you weigh every gain and loss, do you really think you’re suited for it?”
“I…” Wynette fell silent. His words hit her hard.
She couldn’t help but wonder–was he right? Was she really not suited for it?
Wynette’s resolve finally began to shake.
Adriel gave her a chance to argue back, but she chose to stay silent.
He stared at her without blinking.
“Wynette, using your connections and resources to get what you want, that’s how survive.”

He believed she understood the situation at the Jewell Group better than anyone else.
This was her first real lesson in business.
