Sebastian's brows knitted together.
Helena rarely initiated calls with him.
Over the past seven years, she was painfully aware of his indifference, so she always treaded lightly.
She only ever called when there was an actual emergency.
If he didn't answer by the third ring, she always hung up.
She had never relentlessly let it ring like this.
What the hell was going on?
The sudden realization that Helena was pregnant hit him, and his scowl deepened.
Janetta didn't miss that micro-shift in his expression.
She didn't dare make a scene, but she shot her assistant a frantic look, silently commanding her to get Helena out of there immediately.
She absolutely refused to let this night be ruined.
But with Sebastian standing right there, Janetta couldn't make her panic too obvious.
Meanwhile, Helena watched Janetta's Assistant marching toward her. She stood her ground, looking completely at ease, without a single intention of leaving.
She was betting that the assistant wouldn't dare use force.
Not with a room packed full of people.
If this turned into a public spectacle, it would blow up in Janetta's face.
Helena didn't disconnect the call, letting Sebastian's phone ring continuously.
Janetta noticed Sebastian glancing at his screen again.
Forcing down her panic, she smoothly stepped in front of him, blocking his line of sight.
She was terrified he would spot Helena in the crowd.
"What is it?" Sebastian asked, a frown tugging at his lips.
"The ceremony is starting in seconds. Seb, can whatever it is wait until after we're done?" Janetta said softly, her voice laced with manufactured grievance.
Her gorgeous eyes carried a hint of desperate pleading, completely lowering her pride.
She knew better than anyone that Sebastian despised dramatic, clingy women. He preferred them obedient, sweet, and manageable.
So, presented with this version of Janetta, Sebastian felt a sense of control.
Now that she was pregnant, they had to keep it a secret from the public.
That guilt ate at Sebastian constantly.
Janetta's words struck a very complicated nerve deep within him.
His gaze softened as he looked down at her. "Okay."
Instantly, Janetta broke into a dazzling smile.
She made it seem as though this tiny concession was all she needed to be thrilled, painting herself as someone effortlessly easy to please.
Not like Helena, who occupied the position of Mrs. Hayes but constantly grasped for more.
Did she actually want his love?
What a complete delusion.
That thought caused a dark shadow to cross Sebastian's eyes.
The event staff were ready.
Janetta stood perfectly beside Sebastian, her slender fingers naturally intertwining with his.
