She was going to have to play the role of the madly-in-love wife in front of Wynn. If she didn't, the shock of their toxic reality could send her brother into a fatal tailspin.
Helena stayed silent, sickened by his brilliant, ruthless manipulation. He had backed her into a corner where she didn't even have the luxury of throwing a tantrum.
She looked him dead in the eye. "So you're saying I have to put on a show and act like we're happily married?"
He gave a noncommittal shrug.
A bitter smirk touched her lips. "Aren't you worried your actual soulmate might find out? If she gets her feelings hurt, you might not be able to buy her enough purses to fix it."
"Janetta isn't petty," he fired back instantly.
Helena just stared at him. Right. Of course. In his eyes, Janetta was an angel incapable of jealousy, while Helena was the paranoid, unhinged villain.
Janetta wasn't petty? She had spent the last year orchestrating brilliant, psychotic schemes to destroy Helena's life, and Sebastian swallowed every lie like it was gospel.
But she was done fighting a losing battle. She was stuck here, waiting for her chance to strike. If playing house kept Wynn alive, she would win a damn Oscar.
Without another word, she walked past him out the door.
Sebastian fell into step beside her. The doctor, sweating bullets and keeping his eyes glued to the floor, led them swiftly down the hall to the VIP ward.
Helena paused outside the door, her heart hammering against her ribs. Taking a deep breath, she pushed it open.
Wynn was propped up against the pillows. He looked pale and hollowed out, but the second he saw her, his face lit up.
"Lena!" he rasped, trying to push himself up.
As Sebastian spoke, he stepped up right behind her. He wrapped a possessive, gentle arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. "Sit down, sweetheart. You shouldn't be on your feet too long."
He smoothly dragged a plush chair over for her. Every micro-expression, every touch, screamed 'devoted husband.'
"Wow, he really treats you like a queen, Lena," Wynn beamed.
Sebastian chuckled softly. "She's my wife. If I don't spoil her, who will?"
Helena wanted to vomit. But with her brother watching her with such bright, hopeful eyes, she just forced a stiff, blushing smile.
Then, Sebastian turned his attention back to Wynn, transforming into the most charismatic man in the room.
