Helena stayed quiet. This was The Hayes Estate, after all, and he had every right to be home.
"Come with me to the golf course later. I've got a tee time with Mr. Lee. The air is fresh out there, and there's a place that makes excellent Italy cuisine. I remember you like Italy cuisine." He laid out the day's itinerary in one breath.
"Sebastian..." She took a sip of milk, finding it hard to swallow.
She couldn't stand how he could act like absolutely nothing had happened every single time.
But before she could get another word out, his voice drifted over, alarmingly calm.
"About yesterday. I apologize. I shouldn't have taken my frustrations out on you."
She didn't respond.
The apology was bland, almost entirely dismissive.
Anyone could tell from his tone that he wasn't taking it seriously.
But to her, it was a genuine shock.
She never expected him to actually apologize.
She couldn't even put a name to the tangled knot of emotions in her chest.
But for now, calm indifference was better than his explosive rage.
At this stage in her pregnancy, she couldn't afford any more emotional spikes.
Instinctively, she brought her hands down to cradle her belly.
The little one inside, sensing her mother's touch, began kicking happily.
A soft, tender smile touched her eyes.
Noticing her silence, Sebastian frowned slightly.
"Does your stomach hurt?" he asked bluntly.
She looked up, meeting his eyes.
"No. I heard what you said," she replied in a rigid, business-like tone.
She didn't offer anything else.
She was deeply conflicted about their current dynamic, but she couldn't muster up the energy to give him a bigger reaction.
Seeing her distant demeanor, he simply went quiet.
When he made no move to leave the table, she frowned inwardly.
But she kept her face completely impassive.
Suddenly, her appetite vanished entirely.
Undeterred by her coldness, he reached out, resting his large palm over her belly.
Instantly, the baby stopped moving.
It was parked directly on The Scandal Headline.
In the search bar sat Janetta's name.
But he hadn't hit the search button.
Helena didn't say a word, though the self-deprecating mockery in her eyes grew more pronounced.
At the end of the day, he still cared.
It wasn't until Carter's call came in that he finally switched apps.
The conversation dragged on for a long time.
By the time they arrived at the golf course, he had just hung up.
Sebastian's Bodyguards had already opened the car door.
He stepped out smoothly, leaning down with effortless grace.
Then, he stood by the door, waiting for her.
But he merely stood there.
Every time she had seen him in the media, he was always fiercely guarding Janetta as she got out of the car.
He would place a gentlemanly hand on the roof to make sure she didn't bump her head.
