Arthur didn't dare openly defy Grace.
But under the circumstances, he had no idea how to navigate the order.
Ultimately, he nodded in defeat. "I'll handle it right away."
"Hold on. Drag her down here first," Grace commanded, her face twisting with spite.
She meant Helena.
Arthur nodded again.
He hurried up to the third floor and pushed open the door to the cramped room.
Helena jumped at the sound.
When she realized it was just Arthur, a fraction of the tension left her shoulders.
Arthur was a loyal veteran of the estate, handpicked by Sebastian's grandfather.
He had worked for the family for decades.
He had always treated her with quiet respect.
"Mrs. Hayes, Madam is asking for you downstairs," Arthur said gently.
Her hands instantly balled into tight fists.
Her entire body locked up.
Arthur didn't miss her reaction.
He knew exactly what she was terrified of.
He had spent enough years in this house to see exactly how these vicious family politics played out.
But as a mere employee, it wasn't his place to intervene.
He could only sigh heavily in his heart.
He tried to offer some comfort. "Mrs. Hayes, just do whatever Madam asks. Don't fight back. If you keep your head down, she might go easier on you."
He knew about the murder allegations.
But his gut told him this quiet, gentle woman could never commit such a violent crime.
Yet, with the evidence stacked against her, he couldn't openly defend her.
"You're still carrying a child. No matter how unreasonable Madam gets, she won't cross the line and put the baby in real danger," he reasoned softly. "And you have to think of your brother. If you fall, he falls with you. If something happens to him, you'll break."
She knew all of this.
But the sheer, paralyzing dread settling deep in her bones wasn't something she could just switch off.
Arthur looked like he wanted to say more.
