But she knew exactly how to wrap her demands in sweet compliance, making sure she never crossed his boundaries or triggered his annoyance.
Helena was the complete opposite.
Every single thing that woman did felt like she was deliberately stomping on his absolute last nerve, defying him at every turn.
Just the thought of Helena made his blood boil all over again.
"I'll have Helena cook for you," he stated flatly. "It's the least she can do to pay you back."
Janetta bit her lower lip to hide her victorious smirk, knowing she had gotten exactly what she wanted.
But out loud, she kept her tone hesitant and demure. "Seb, is that really a good idea? People might think I'm deliberately bullying her."
"She's a murderer. Who's going to defend a murderer?" he spat, his face turning ice-cold.
Janetta was smart enough to drop the subject immediately.
She knew when to push and when to back off.
If she kept arguing, she would just sound whiny and demanding.
Janetta understood this game perfectly.
"Okay," she nodded meekly.
The two of them fell into a comfortable silence.
For the better part of the afternoon, Sebastian stayed by her side to keep her company.
But for some inexplicable reason, every time his mind wandered to how desperately Helena protected her unborn baby...
He couldn't help but notice that Janetta seemed strangely unaffected by the loss of hers.
It was as if she didn't care that the baby was gone.
Almost like she was relieved.
But he quickly shook the absurd thought from his head.
How could she not care? She had been carrying that child for almost seven months.
She just didn't want to burden him with her grief.
Janetta had never been the type to drag him down with her own negativity.
That was precisely why he felt so deeply indebted to her after all these years.
And why he tolerated her occasional little manipulative stunts.
Rationalizing it this way put his mind at ease again.
"Mr. Hayes..." The butler's cautious voice suddenly echoed from the hallway outside the guest suite.
Janetta shot a covert glance toward the door.
Sebastian remained unfazed, simply humming in acknowledgment.
