Sebastian furrowed his brows, looking at Helena.
Her emotions were far too volatile.
He didn't even get a chance to speak.
"Sebastian..." Helena's voice was laced with profound sorrow. "You've been coaxing me just to make me drop my guard and trust you, haven't you? You played nice so my fever would break, ensuring my cornea would be perfectly healthy for Janetta. Isn't that right?"
Helena was completely unravelling.
By the end, it was impossible to tell if she was demanding answers or begging, her gaze desolate as she looked at Sebastian.
"Please, Sebastian, let me see her. Wynn passed away and I didn't get to see him. I don't want my daughter to die without me even getting to say goodbye."
Helena suffered a total breakdown.
Tears streamed down her face as she looked at Sebastian.
It was hard to say if it was an accusation or a plea.
Sebastian's gaze turned somber, but his demeanor remained frustratingly calm. "Helena, you need to calm down before we talk about this!"
"I can't calm down!" Helena screamed at him.
She realized then that Sebastian had absolutely no intention of letting her inside.
So, she decided to force her way in.
Her only thought was getting to Hope.
Without hesitation, she bolted toward the NICU.
Sebastian instinctively seized her arm in a vice grip.
Helena fought him, thrashing wildly.
Sebastian's voice sliced through the air, cold and merciless. "Helena, if you barge in there right now and Hope crashes, you will officially be the one who killed her. She's practically in a sterile bubble with critical vitals, and you want to storm in and introduce chaos?"
Those words made Helena freeze, staring at Sebastian in absolute horror.
A paralyzing dread shot up from the soles of her feet.
It suffocated her, crushing the air from her lungs.
Sebastian didn't loosen his grip, his eyes deadly serious.
He bet everything on the fact that Helena wouldn't dare risk Hope's life.
The two were locked in a tense standoff.
Just then, a nurse sprinted out of the NICU, her face pale with panic.
"Doctor, the patient's oxygen levels are tanking!"
Everyone's face immediately drained of color.
"Mr. Hayes, Ms. Ramirez has fallen into a coma. We must operate immediately," the doctor informed Sebastian with rapid urgency.
This meant Janetta was already being prepped in the OR.
And the surgery wasn't for a brain tumor; it was for her eyes.
She needed a cornea transplant.
Sebastian was fully aware of Janetta's critical condition.
They couldn't afford to wait another second.
She had hit the absolute limit of her timeline.
He was forced to make a choice.
Sebastian's eyes darkened with cold calculation.
At that exact moment, his phone vibrated against his chest.
He quickly answered the call.
"Speak," Sebastian commanded grimly.
"Mr. Hayes, regarding that sixty-percent match cornea we found earlier... we ran it against Mrs. Hayes' profile, and it's a ninety-percent match for her. I understand your objective: you need Ms. Ramirez to regain her sight, but you also want to ensure Mrs. Hayes doesn't go entirely blind. Given these variables, we can perform a simultaneous swap. We transplant the donor cornea into Mrs. Hayes, and harvest Mrs. Hayes' perfectly healthy cornea for Ms. Ramirez. We kill two birds with one stone."
