She had heard the startled cry, too—a woman's voice.
For some reason, Janetta instinctively knew it was Helena.
From the very moment this new Helena appeared, things had changed.
Janetta's sense of foreboding had only grown stronger.
For a split second, Janetta had the urge to go out and find Sebastian.
But she had no idea where he was.
She knew better than to try and get his whereabouts out of Carter Miles.
Carter's lips were sealed tight.
In the end, the only one stuck in a passive position was Janetta.
Meanwhile, Sebastian had already rushed into the master bedroom at the first sign of trouble.
The sound had come from the bathroom.
Helena hadn't noticed the puddle she had splashed earlier, and her slippers had slid right out from under her.
She had landed squarely on her backside.
Sebastian furrowed his brow and quickly scooped her up into his arms.
"I'll have the doctor come over," Sebastian stated firmly.
"There's no need. It's nothing serious, I just need to rest a bit," Helena replied coolly.
Sebastian clearly disagreed.
Helena was equally direct. "There's a torrential downpour outside. No one is on the roads. Besides, I know my own body perfectly well. Also, Mr. Hayes, please put me down."
Her tone remained painfully indifferent.
"Sorry," Sebastian offered an unprompted apology.
But he made no move to release her.
He didn't let go until he had carried her over and gently set her on the bed.
"I'll go get some ointment," Sebastian volunteered.
Helena didn't object.
Soon, Sebastian retrieved a medicated patch from the medical kit and handed it to her.
Helena had actually bruised her hip and lower back.
It was an awkward spot to reach.
But there was no way she was going to ask him for help.
"Tomorrow, when the rain stops, we're going to the hospital," Sebastian said, his words leaving no room for argument.
