After all their years together, it was impossible for her to be completely indifferent to him.
But when the question was laid bare on the table, she couldn't answer it.
Perhaps the agonizing pain of the past made her terrified to even broach the subject.
So she simply remained silent.
Her reaction was all the answer Julian needed.
He let out a very soft chuckle, mocking himself.
"Lena, you've never truly let Sebastian go, have you?" he asked bluntly, sparing no pleasantries.
Surprisingly, she remained perfectly calm.
It took a long moment before she answered, "I have let him go. But after all these years of suffering, I suppose I just need a definitive conclusion to finally find peace."
She spoke without a tremor of emotion.
Julian knew exactly what she meant.
He knew better than anyone that these past few years had been anything but easy for her.
She only looked fine on the surface, just to keep everyone else at ease.
In reality, she had been living in the suffocating shadow Sebastian cast over her.
For a long time, she had battled severe depression.
She had been reliant on medication.
Even now, having decided to return to Riverton, she was still taking her pills.
Even her therapist had said that the only one who could undo the knot was the one who tied it; no one else could fight this battle for her.
She had to figure it out and untangle it herself.
Given that, Julian had no way to force her to stop.
But there was no way he was happy about this.
It was mostly a deep-seated fear.
He knew exactly what kind of fallout would come from her tangling with Sebastian again.
Slowly, he spoke up. "Lena, I've always understood your intentions. But—"
He paused, as if carefully weighing his next words.
Helena didn't interrupt, simply listening in silence.
