Sebastian had never paid close attention to the original Helena's habits, but he vaguely remembered there were certain things she refused to eat.
When she cooked, she would intentionally leave them out of her own portions.
If it was something he liked, she would prepare a separate dish entirely for him.
If his memory served him right, it had been green peppers and onions.
He knew the suspicion creeping into his mind sounded completely absurd.
But outwardly, he maintained his silence.
They finished the rest of their meal with minimal conversation.
Just as she set her fork down, her assistant called.
She gave him a polite nod and stood up to take it.
He watched her retreating figure without saying a word.
He waited until she was standing by the living room's floor-to-ceiling windows, a safe distance from the dining area.
Only then did he calmly dial the retired butler, Arthur.
He had worked for the Hayes Estate for years before retiring last year.
"Mr. Hayes, what a surprise to hear from you," Arthur answered, slightly taken aback but maintaining his utmost respect.
The Hayes family had treated him well.
Even in retirement, they sent him generous holiday bonuses and ensured he lived comfortably.
Naturally, Arthur held him in high regard.
"What were the things my wife refused to eat back in the day? Do you remember?" Sebastian asked quietly after a brief pause.
"Your wife? Well, there's quite a list of things she won't touch," Arthur replied, trying to jog his memory.
He immediately started rattling off Janetta's dislikes.
Because right now, Janetta was Mrs. Hayes.
Arthur found the question odd, considering her picky eating habits were hardly a secret.
Sebastian knew them, and the press definitely knew them.
But since the boss asked, Arthur dutifully listed them.
Janetta was notoriously difficult to serve.
