Sebastian's words instantly put Helena on edge.
Knowing him as well as she did, she knew he never asked questions without a reason.
Years ago, the doctors had told her that Skye's rare blood type could only have been inherited from her biological father.
And Helena didn't have it.
The thought alone made a knot form in her stomach.
Outwardly, however, she remained a picture of calm.
Their gazes met in the air, a silent undercurrent of tension surging between them.
Nearby, the nurse had finished examining Skye and was now trying to coax the little girl into taking her medicine.
Skye was fiercely resisting.
Helena knew exactly why.
The girl had practically grown up in hospitals, forced to swallow an endless barrage of pills every single day.
Naturally, she loathed taking medication of any kind.
An ordinary person stood no chance of persuading her.
Even when Helena managed to talk her into it,
the moment her back was turned, Skye would just spit it out.
It was a constant headache.
Catching the nurse's pleading look, Helena stood up to intervene.
But Sebastian beat her to it, swiftly returning to the child's side.
He crouched down, looking at Skye with infinite patience.
Helena's footsteps faltered.
To her surprise, Sebastian genuinely coaxed her, gently talking the little girl into swallowing every last pill.
She watched Skye's throat bob, confirming the medicine was actually down.
Helena fell silent.
In her memory, he had never been this patient.
Was it because of Janetta's son?
She pushed the thought away, masking her emotions.
"It's so bitter!" Skye complained, looking utterly wronged.
"How about some candy?" Sebastian chuckled.
