Helena caught the implication perfectly.
They were in Riverton, and he held all the power here.
Even if the Campbell family intervened, their influence was rooted in Coralia; it wouldn't necessarily hold weight here.
And dragging them into this would only bring more trouble to her doorstep.
She didn't want to burden Julian, especially given the delicate nature of Skye's true parentage.
She would never risk exposing the child.
Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to calm down.
She looked back up at him and let out a cynical laugh. "So, you really do care for your wife. The rumors about your unbreakable bond over the years must be true."
She knew exactly what she was trying to provoke with that statement.
She was baiting him, waiting for his reaction.
But he offered nothing.
The heavy, unspoken tension between them lingered.
"I need time to think about this," she finally conceded. "And I need to run it by Claire."
"Take your time. I'll wait to hear from you," he agreed with a curt nod.
She gave a brief nod of acknowledgment.
This time, he didn't block her path, allowing her to walk away.
Skye's examinations were completely finished by the time she returned.
As Helena walked into the room, the little girl immediately peeked behind her.
"Sebastian didn't come back with you?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Do you actually want him here?" Helena smiled, gently pinching her nose.
"Well, his candy was really good. I wanted to ask what brand it was," she mumbled.
It was an incredibly transparent excuse.
Helena let out a breathy laugh. "You're unbelievable. Janetta is the one who hurt you, and you're still buddy-buddy with him?"
