Julian just hadn't expected Helena and Kyle to stay in contact.
In Julian's eyes, Kyle was simply Janetta's son to Helena.
She should logically have completely ignored the boy.
After all, no one loved the child of their enemy.
Yet, things clearly weren't playing out the way he thought.
Was this the innate pull of bloodlines?
Julian remained silent, completely quiet throughout.
His fingertips tapped a rhythmic, silent beat against his laptop.
On the screen, Jensen's chat window sprang to life again.
Jensen: [Mr. Campbell, has something happened?]
Julian: [What are the odds of the Campbell family winning a custody battle against Sebastian for Kyle?]
Jensen stared at Julian's message in shock. He was well aware of Kyle and Helena's true relationship.
After all, Jensen was the one who had handled the entire affair back then.
Despite his surprise, Jensen quickly composed a calm, objective reply.
Jensen: [Mr. Campbell, our chances are incredibly low. First, she gave up her rights to the child initially. Second, Sebastian's wealth guarantees the boy a highly privileged life. Third, anyone can see Sebastian's unwavering dedication to the child over the past few years. Winning is virtually impossible.]
Julian: [And if Sebastian were to go bankrupt?]
Jensen: [That changes everything. Also, the child's own preference would be a critical factor.]
Julian: [Understood.]
He didn't say another word, simply shutting his laptop with a quiet click.
In the darkness, his predatory gaze burned with unnatural intensity.
It took a long while for Julian to finally settle down.
He smoothly pulled Helena into his arms and slowly closed his eyes.
Yet even at that slight movement, despite Helena being fast asleep,
he could feel the rigid tension radiating from her.
It was an anxiety baked into her very bones.
