"Nothing. It's just bad timing," Julian finally said. "Something urgent came up at work. I have to fly out to Paris tonight, and then hit a few countries in Eastern Europe. I won't be back for at least two weeks."
The coincidence was brutal.
The second Skye showed up, he had to leave for Europe on short notice.
"With Skye there, I'm worried it's going to be too much for you to handle alone," he admitted.
"I'll be fine. She's easy to take care of and super well-behaved. Besides, the housekeeper comes during the day, so I don't have to do chores. And she has school during the week, so it won't be a big deal," Helena reassured him immediately.
Truthfully, when it came to Skye...
Helena would never say no.
Julian knew that full well.
"Alright," he hummed, dropping the issue.
"If it gets to be too much, just have the main house send some staff over, okay?" he instructed.
"Okay," Helena agreed.
"I've saved her pediatrician's info in your contacts. If anything happens, just reach out to Jensen Shaw. I'll wrap things up as quickly as possible."
"Got it. Go focus on work. Don't worry about us."
Julian murmured his assent before adding softly, "Lena, I'm going to miss you so much."
"I'll miss you too," she replied gently.
Julian let out a warm chuckle.
He clearly had absolutely no idea that Sebastian was now living right next door.
The realization allowed Helena to finally exhale.
Just before he ended the call, he added, "Wait for me to get back, okay?"
It felt loaded with double meaning.
Helena was a grown woman; she knew exactly what that smoky tone implied.
She just hummed softly in response.
Julian seemed satisfied.
They finally hung up.
Helena stared blankly at the dark screen, surrounded by absolute silence.
The quiet was shattered when Skye walked out of the bathroom, letting out a massive sneeze.
She carefully tucked the little girl beneath the duvet.
After putting the hairdryer away in a drawer...
She dimmed the lights and slipped into bed beside her.
A peaceful quiet settled over the room.
Helena gazed down at Skye, her heart melting with pure affection.
But looking at her sleeping face, her mind drifted right back to Sebastian.
Father and daughter truly looked so much alike.
Especially Skye's eyes—they were practically a carbon copy of Sebastian's.
And remembering how relentlessly aggressive he had been acting lately...
The suffocating sense of dread pooling in Helena's chest only grew heavier.
Eventually, she forced her eyes shut and willed herself to sleep.
At exactly 2:10 AM.
Helena was jolted awake by the sound of Skye mumbling feverishly in her sleep.
