Besides, deep down, she absolutely dreaded the idea of Sebastian getting too close to Skye.
She was terrified of what might happen.
Her rejection didn't surprise him in the slightest; it was exactly what he expected.
He didn't press the issue.
Moments later, the medical team wheeled Skye out of the observation room.
Helena rushed to her side, shadowing the gurney all the way to the inpatient ward.
Sebastian didn't follow them in. Instead, he altered his course and headed straight for the attending doctor.
The doctor froze the second he saw him. "Mr. Hayes..."
The recent scandal headlines had been plastered everywhere; there was no way the doctor wouldn't recognize Coralia's most infamous billionaire.
A wave of nervous awkwardness washed over the physician.
Sebastian looked down at him, his gaze piercing. "I just want to ask about Skye's condition."
The sheer magnitude of the man's presence was suffocating. It was impossible for the doctor not to feel a tremor of anxiety.
Forcing himself to maintain professional composure, he nodded. "Go ahead, sir."
"How premature was she?" Sebastian asked casually, as if making simple conversation.
The doctor hesitated for a fraction of a second. "The records state thirty-two weeks. Incomplete cardiopulmonary development, along with multiple severe complications."
Sebastian's eyes darkened fractionally at the answer.
Such a coincidence?
Helena's daughter had also been born at thirty-two weeks.
"She wasn't born at The Sanctuary Hospital, was she?" he continued his casual interrogation.
The doctor shook his head. "No, she wasn't."
"Was she resuscitated right away?"
"That's the part that baffles us. There are absolutely no surgical records," the doctor said, frowning deeply. "And because of that missing data, the secondary open-chest surgery carried a catastrophic amount of risk and difficulty."
As he spoke, the doctor brought up another critical detail without prompting: Skye's blood type.
"The young Miss also has an incredibly rare blood type, making it a logistical nightmare to prepare blood reserves every time. When she was suddenly transferred to us back then, the entire department was operating on a knife's edge."
"Thank God everything went smoothly."
Even now, the memory of that ordeal sent a shiver down the doctor's spine.
"Are the risks for her future surgeries high?" Sebastian asked darkly.
"Extremely," the doctor admitted without sugarcoating it. "For our team, the risk factor remains incredibly daunting. But if we could secure Professor Xander's team, those risks would be minimized drastically. Unfortunately, we have absolutely no way of contacting him."
Sebastian didn't reply.
Professor Xander was a ghost in the medical world, entirely unpredictable and utterly averse to media exposure.
He arrived at every surgery fully masked and gowned; identifying him was harder than ascending to heaven.
