But his fake tenderness had reeled her back in. She had genuinely started to believe they could fix their marriage. And this baby had fought so hard to survive, pulling through the hemorrhage against all odds. She couldn't bring herself to extinguish a life fighting that fiercely.
This was her baby. Sebastian might see the child as a pawn, but to her, it was everything.
Taking a slow, shuddering breath, Helena rested a hand flat against her stomach, gently soothing the frantic flutters. Gradually, the baby settled.
Down the hall, Janetta was still basking in her triumph, looking up at Sebastian with faux worry. "Seb, what if Helena finds out?"
Helena stayed perfectly still. She wanted to hear his answer.
But Janetta kept talking, her tone dripping with mock sympathy. "She's carrying a child. Even if it's just for the will, you should be a little nicer to her. Pregnant women get so emotional. Plus, you two have seven years of history together, right?"
"You actually want me to coddle her?" Sebastian raised an eyebrow, sounding amused by her saintly attitude.
"Well, it's still your child she's carrying. Since the baby is so crucial to your inheritance, of course I care about it," Janetta reasoned smoothly.
Sebastian didn't push the topic.
Honestly, Janetta was a little disappointed. She knew Helena was listening. She had hoped to trigger a massive emotional breakdown that would force a miscarriage right then and there. She knew better than anyone that the child in Helena's womb was the biggest threat to her future. But Sebastian was proving harder to control lately; she felt a creeping sense of powerlessness, as if he was slowly slipping through her fingers.
"Seb..." she began, reaching up.
