Helena didn't dare twitch a muscle, terrified that the slightest shift in her breathing would give her away.
She forced her rigid body to go completely limp in his hold.
Eventually, whether from sheer mental exhaustion or the late hour, she drifted into a restless sleep.
The master bedroom plunged into a heavy, suffocating silence.
The next four or five days passed in a mundane, terrifying blur.
Sebastian played the role of the devoted caretaker flawlessly, and every night, the poisoned milk was left on her nightstand.
He catered to her every whim.
Any normal woman would have fallen madly in love with a man like him.
In the darkness of her mind, she tried to trace the contours of his face, hoping to spark a sliver of romantic affection.
But every attempt just left her frowning.
For a reason she couldn't explain, an overwhelming sense of dread shadowed his every touch, leaving her trapped in a state of constant, dizzying panic.
She tried to chalk it up to her amnesia playing tricks on her.
But as the days went on without the nightly dose of sedatives, the fog in her brain began to thin.
Fractured shards of memory began to stitch themselves together.
They were still hazy, like looking through frosted glass, but she was starting to grasp the horrifying shape of the truth.
Whenever she tried to pry deeper into those buried memories, her head would pound mercilessly.
The agony was unbearable.
Eventually, the sheer pain forced her to stop digging.
But the suffocating paranoia settling over her heart only grew heavier, morphing into a terrifying certainty she couldn't vocalize.
Consequently, she grew increasingly withdrawn.
In the beginning, she had relentlessly peppered him with questions about their past.
Now, she barely spoke a word.
She sat in silence, observing him through the dark.
Her sudden quietness didn't escape Sebastian's notice. "What's wrong? Are you feeling sick?"
He instinctively pressed the back of his hand to her forehead, checking for a fever.
She flinched internally but shook her head. "No. I think sitting in the dark all day is just starting to mess with my head. I feel numb."
"I'll have the doctor take another look later," he assured her, his tone perfectly steady. "Besides, we'll be heading back to Riverton in a few days."
