He offered a calm, unhurried explanation before she could even ask.
"Hope flew out to the Capital entirely on her own. She lied to Claire Campbell, claiming you had authorized the trip. The absolute terror didn't call me until she actually landed. She was too terrified of you screaming at her to call you directly. And I knew if I used my own number, you'd instantly decline the call. So, we're using her phone."
He laid out the sheer, chaotic reality of the situation with brutal efficiency.
She was absolutely utterly stunned.
She could not fathom that the little girl had actually pulled off such an insane stunt.
Skye was in the Capital? She had snuck onto a plane completely unsupervised?
"She's not even twelve years old! How the hell did they let her on a commercial flight?" she demanded.
"She did the exact same thing last time, didn't she? She hacked her way through the unaccompanied minor protocols on the airline website, booked herself a first-class ticket, and just casually hopped on," he chuckled softly.
There was even a distinct hint of arrogant, fatherly pride bleeding into his tone.
A massive migraine began to throb behind Helena's eyes.
"I've already picked her up from the airport, so stop panicking. I'm taking her to get some dinner, and then I'm putting her straight to bed. I'll bring her to the hospital to see you tomorrow morning."
"Otherwise, she'll just exhaust herself, and dragging her through a hospital ward tonight is a guaranteed way for her to catch something."
He had meticulously planned out every single detail to perfection.
Even though her massive surgery had been a success, and she had spent months recovering.
She was essentially indistinguishable from any healthy child now.
But she still couldn't afford to push her immune system to the absolute limit.
Especially not in a highly contagious environment like a hospital.
"Fine," she relented, realizing he was entirely correct.
"I'll see you tonight," he murmured, his tone dropping into that sickeningly sweet, coaxing cadence.
It sounded exactly like a devoted husband murmuring sweet nothings to his wife.
She refused to reply to that.
He didn't seem to care about the blatant rejection.
And simply ended the call himself.
Sophia had been sitting right there, shamelessly eavesdropping on the entire exchange.
She immediately voiced her verdict. "You never had that kind of vibe when you talked to Professor Zane. But when you talk to Sebastian... even if you're screaming at each other, it just feels domestic. Like you two are actually navigating real life together."
She wasn't entirely sure if she was articulating the bizarre dynamic correctly.
Helena remained deadly quiet.
