"Why isn't Professor Zane here?" she asked, genuinely curious. "He isn't on campus, but he isn't here with you either."
Helena fell silent for a beat before finally admitting, "We broke up."
Sophia stared at her in utter shock. "Why?"
"I don't even know how to begin to explain it," she sighed, truly lacking the vocabulary for the sheer insanity of the situation. "The bottom line is, we're over."
Sophia narrowed her eyes at her friend. "Is it because of Sebastian? I literally just saw him in the hallway. There is zero chance he would be hanging around your hospital room if there wasn't something going on between you two."
That acutely accurate observation forced Helena into a defensive silence.
Sophia knew instantly she had hit the nail right on the head.
She let out a heavy sigh and decided to stop dancing around the issue.
"Lena, I think you're just trapped in this bitter resentment. You never really let him go. You were married to that man for five years. You went into that marriage completely head over heels in love with him, believing in this perfect fairytale. And when he shattered that, when it ended in absolute, traumatizing ruin, it left a massive psychological scar that you've never actually processed."
"I honestly think you need him to grovel. You need him to obsess over you and care for you the way you always dreamed a husband should."
She ruthlessly psychoanalyzed her friend's deepest, darkest desires.
"Because once you finally get that validation, you might actually be able to close the book on him for good," she concluded with clinical precision.
Helena offered absolutely no rebuttal.
Because she knew Sophia was one hundred percent correct.
That was the exact, twisted reason she was allowing him to play nursemaid.
She was forcibly extracting the devotion he had starved her of during their marriage.
But once she finally bled him dry of that validation, would she actually be able to walk away?
She was terrified that she didn't know the answer to that anymore.
"I don't know," she finally whispered after a long, suffocating silence.
"Lena," Sophia sighed softly, "You're the only one who can figure out how this ends."
"If you were me, what would you do?" she asked, desperate for a lifeline.
Sophia paused, seriously considering the chaotic hypothetical. "I'd probably give him three months. I'd let him worship me to fill that psychological void, and by the end of it, I'd know exactly what I actually wanted."
She paused for a beat. "But honestly, after how catastrophically toxic your divorce was, I don't see how you two could ever actually work. As for him... I have no idea what goes on in that terrifying brain of his, but I think he's desperate to atone."
