Julian felt entirely guilty. Knowing Jarrod was practically a walking powder keg, he didn't dare test his limits.

He offered a cautious, placating smile. "Jarrod, I know I messed up. Don't be mad. I swear, it'll never happen again."

"You think there's going to be a next time?" Jarrod's eyes were like shards of ice.

"No, no! Absolutely not!"

Julian stole a few nervous glances at Jarrod. Once he was reasonably sure he wasn't going to get punched, he carefully suggested, "Hey, we should really hit the hospital first. If those cuts scar your face permanently, Stella is going to... be heartbroken."

He had almost said 'disgusted,' but one lethal glare from Jarrod made him switch gears instantly.

Jarrod slid into the back of the car, his expression unreadable, while Julian instructed the driver to head straight to the hospital.

"Look into why George Quinn slapped Stella," Jarrod ordered out of nowhere.

Julian blinked, momentarily thrown, before his memory clicked. Sebastian had mentioned in their group chat that the woman he fell for was crying alone after being slapped by her family.

They hadn't known it was Stella back then. But now that the truth was out, it made perfect sense that Jarrod wanted every detail.

"Jarrod, that happened ages ago. Digging it up now seems a little pointless."

Julian decided to be brutally honest. "Plus, I get why you're pissed, but didn't you guys have a massive fight before you flew back?"

Jarrod's jaw ticked. Replaying that bitter exchange with Stella only churned the frustration in his gut. He shut his eyes, his face completely closed off, refusing to entertain Julian's probing.
