Chapter 10
Only at the Pulitzer Prize ceremony did Adrian finally see the familiar face again.
“Audrey!” He grabbed my hand, his eyes bloodshot. “Where have you been? I can’t find
you.”
I frowned in disgust and shook his hand. “Sir, please respect me.”
He tried to grab me, but another big hand firmly held me back.
Adrian turned.
The man facing him was Julian Mercer.
“Back off,” Adrian snapped.
“The one who needs to back off is you.” I stepped in close to Julian and curled my hand around his arm.
Adrian’s gaze dropped to our fingers where they were laced together.
Then he looked back at me and his whole voice changed. “Audrey, I was wrong. Please don’t leave me.”
I didn’t bother arguing.
I just took Julian’s hand and walked away with him.
As the ceremony began, everyone took their seats.
The lights came up.

The host smiled toward the crowd and announced, “This year’s Pulitzer Prize goes to…”
“Audrey Winslow.”
The room exploded.
I walked to the stage under a storm of applause and accepted the trophy under the gaze of the entire room.
When I finished my speech, I smiled and added one more thing. “In six months, I’ll be getting engaged. When the time comes, you’re all welcome to attend our engagement party.”
Adrian snapped.
He shot to his feet, crossed the distance in seconds, and seized my hand.
“Audrey is my wife! She’s not leaving with you.”
I tried to yank free and couldn’t.
So I lifted my other hand and slapped him across the face.
“Get off me.”
