Chapter 1
Eight years married to Preston Hayes, and I’ve never met our son.
Not once.
The moment our baby was born, Preston took him straight to the family estate.
He sighed and said:
‘Riley, marrying you was already breaking all the rules. But when it comes to raising the heir? My parents won’t budge on this one.”
‘Besides, with your education and background, do you really think you can raise a proper Hayes heir?”
I swallowed the pain, figuring that’s just how old–money families operate.
Until last night when our son asked to see me for the first time.
I was so freaking excited to finally meet him. But when my seven–year–old looked at me, the first thing he said was:
‘Are you the side chick my dad keeps?”
My brain literally went blank.
Then I whipped around to stare at Preston, my heart dropping to the floor.
Preston was obviously freaking out and trying to get our son out of there fast.
‘Where’d you learn to talk like that? That’s completely unacceptable! Go home right now and copy your worksheets ten times!”
But that just set our son Callum off even more.
He dodged Preston’s reach and ran straight at me, shoving me hard.
See? You’re totally manipulating him! You didn’t even say anything and you already got my dad to punish me!”
I’m gonna teach you a lesson for my mom! You homewrecker!”
stared at this little face that looked exactly like mine.
My chest felt tight and scared and all twisted up inside.
Do you even know that I’m your-”
‘Riley! Stop it!”
Preston’s voice cut me off like a knife.
Chapter 1
I was totally confused, about to say something when this woman walked through the door.
Her shiny black hair caught the breeze, smelling like expensive perfume. Her perfectly tailored coat fit like it was made just for her.
She looked like she’d been pampered her whole life, never had a single bad day.
She glanced at me with this look that made me want to disappear. I found myself tucking my messy hair behind my ears.
Then she walked straight over and ruffled my son’s hair.
‘Running off again? Mom’s really gonna have to let daddy punish you this time.”
My son melted into her arms like butter.
‘Mommy, I’m sorry! You don’t know how mean this woman is!”
My hand froze halfway to my hair. My blood turned to ice.
So this was the “mommy” he was talking about.
Victoria Sterling. Preston’s childhood sweetheart.
His parents‘ dream daughter–in–law from day one.
Perfect family background to match the Hayes fortune. Perfect history with Preston since they were kids.
And me? I was just some scholarship kid who barely scraped by to get into their fancy school.
Even when Preston chose me, his parents never stopped saying I was just after their money.
So I worked my ass off trying to prove them wrong.
Preston kept sneaking credit cards into my purse. I never touched them.
But I knew he was trying to respect my choices while still worrying about me.
Later, he took our son to the family estate for “proper education.”
Seven years. Seven freaking years without letting me see my own kid.
He’d say things like:
You know how much a mother’s influence affects a child, right? Don’t you want what’s best for our son?”
Just wait a little longer. Once his personality and habits are set, my parents will let you two meet.”
thought we understood each other. That we loved each other.
So I trusted him. I respected his choices.
But here’s Victoria, the woman my son calls “mommy.”
Chapter 1
The same Victoria who couldn’t even get into college and only got her degree because daddy donated a whole building.
That’s when it hit me.
This was never about my education or some fancy family tradition.
They just couldn’t stand the idea of the Hayes heir having a regular person for a mom.
And Preston? He never respected me either.
That realization literally knocked the air out of my lungs.
By the time I snapped out of it, Preston was already rushing out with our son.
I stepped forward instinctively, but Victoria blocked the doorway.
She smiled.
‘Save yourself the embarrassment. Preston and that boy belong to me now.”
I ignored her and tried to push past, panic rising in my chest.
Victoria let out this nasty laugh and grabbed my arm.
‘Are you deaf?”
Her sharp nails dug into my skin, leaving red marks.
I tried to shake her off but she wouldn’t let go.
After struggling for a few seconds, I looked up at her with tears in my eyes.
‘I don’t want Preston anymore… I just want my son.”
