There's a heaviness in the air at the breakfast table.
Since no one is saying a word, I message the princess. She responds immediately, and I ask her if she can send me anything about the shadows and any mates they may have had. It doesn't take long for the links to start coming in. I excuse myself from my half-eaten food and head over to my laptop. As I'm sorting through the files, trying to decide what might be important, someone knocks on the door.
"Oliver, my grandmother greets him enthusiastically.
"Grandmother," I hear him say, and then he asks for me.
"Over here," I call out. He comes over to my side and sits beside me.
"What's this?"
"Some information I'm gathering on the King's former mate. She got busy when she left him. I'm hoping I find something that we can use to-"
"Blackmail him?" he finishes when I can't. The smirk on his face makes me laugh, and I bump his shoulder with my own playfully. "You've learned to play dirty."
"Can't be friends with the Lycan Rogues and not pick up a thing or two," I agree.
"I take full responsibility for that," Ana says, coming out of her room.
She hands me a bag of my new favourite chips.
They're dry mango slices covered in chilli powder. I take the new bag to open it and then offer her some because she's in the same position I am. Spicy snacks are becoming essential. My cravings are officially in full swing.
"Thank you." I smile at her when she takes a couple of slices. I offer Oliver some, but he politely declines.
"I can have their autopsies sent to us," she adds.
"We're going to have to go home," I sit back.
"Why?" she asks defensively. I look up at her and sigh. "I have this feeling I can't shake. Dr Calloway's body was never found. I need to find it to make sure She's really dead. If she was like me, like them, what I did to her wouldn't have been enough to kill her. I need to be certain before we can move forward."
"And maybe if we return what's left of her, hell drop it," Oliver nods. "Would it be okay for me to come with you?"
"I don't see why not," my grandmother answers for me. I sigh, glaring at her. It makes her smile.
"Oliver," I shake my head. "If someone of the high court were to see you, you'd be exposed. I know l can't make this decision for you, but you have to remember what you're going to be walking into if you come with us.
"You've made a home here. You have a family, and you have people you need to look out for. Coming back to Blackstone with us would significantly change everything. You will be reinstated as the heir to our bloodline. You might have to move there for a while so you can be tested, and then you'll have military training and-"
"I know," he cuts me off and smiles. "I still need my training. Now that I know who I really am, there are things I want back from my old life, Soph. I am the General's son now. Having my memories back and being the heir is not going to change the fact that
they are a part of my family as well.
"I'm okay with this. I've spoken to my father and my siblings. Because they legally adopted me and gave me a name when I didn't have one, l'll still be with them. I can protect them better this way. You've seen what we're dealing with here.
