Hannah’s POV

Before I could respond, Finn suddenly closed the distance between us. His lips crashed against mine with unexpected forcehard, demanding, nothing like the tender kisses we’d once shared. This wasn’t affection; it was a challenge, a test I could feel in every rigid line of his body.

For a moment, I froze in shock. The man I loved was physically the same, but the coldness behind this kiss was from a stranger.

Still, something deep inside me responded, my lips moving against his with gentle purpose. I wasn’t swept away by passion, but I wasn’t hesitant eitherI kissed him back with deliberate tenderness, letting my actions speak what words couldn’t.

When he abruptly pulled back, his expression remained cold and calculating, those green eyes searching my face for something- deception, perhaps, or manipulation. The clinical assessment in his gaze broke my heart a little more.

I meant what I said,I whispered, finding strength in my voice that surprised even me. I care about you, Finn. The real younot your name or your money.

His face hardened at my words, jaw tightening visibly. I’d struck a nerve, though I hadn’t meant to.

The real meis someone you’ve never met,he said harshly, each word cutting like glass. Then his voice dropped dangerously low. Would you still care if I asked you to die for me?

The question hit me like a physical blow. I stared at him, unable to form words, my mind reeling at the sudden cruelty.

I stared at him, momentarily stunned by the intensity in his eyes. This wasn’t the man who had held me tenderly just weeks agothis was someone hardened by years of survival, someone who measured loyalty in blood.

I would do what matters most,I finally answered, meeting his gaze directly. Dying is easy, Finn. Living for someonestaying when it’s

hard, caring when they push you awaythat’s the real test of devotion.

A flicker of something crossed his facesurprise, perhaps, or grudging respect. He hadn’t expected that answer. Before I could say more,

he let out a sarcastic laugh and walked away.

Morning arrived with pale sunlight streaming through the curtains. I’d barely slept, my mind racing with questions and fears about what this new version of Finn might do. A gentle knock at my door announced Amy.

Mrs. Sterling, she said softly, still using my married name despite Finn’s rejection of our relationship. Breakfast is served in the east wing. Both Mr. Sterling and Mrs. Victoria are expecting you.

I nodded, quickly dressing in a simple dress.

Chapter 46

The east wing of Sterling Estate was a marvel of modern architecturea glassenclosed sunroom that offered panoramic views of the manicured gardens while providing complete privacy from the outside world. Unlike the imposing formality of the main house’s dining room, this space felt almost intimate, designed for family rather than business associates.

Victoria sat at the head of the table, elegant as always in a tailored cream suit that complemented her silver hair. Finn was already seated, looking bored and distant in black jeans and a simple gray tshirt that somehow still managed to look expensive.

Good morning, Hannah,Victoria nodded as I entered. I trust you slept well?

Yes, thank you,I lied politely, taking my place at Finn’s left.

The table was set with an elaborate breakfast spreadfresh fruits arranged in artistic patterns, pastries still steaming from the oven, eggs prepared three different ways, and what appeared to be freshly squeezed orange juice in crystal glasses.

Finn barely glanced at the food, slouching slightly in his chair with the practiced indifference of someone determined not to show interest in his surroundings.

Finn,Victoria’s voice took on a sharper edge, it wouldn’t kill you to engage with your family at mealtimes.

Wouldn’t it?Finn raised an eyebrow, his voice laced with sarcasm. I wouldn’t know. Memory loss and all that.

Victoria’s mouth tightened into a thin line before she turned her attention to me. Hannah, how are you feeling? Any morning sickness?

Some,I admitted, reaching for a piece of toast. But it’s manageable.

Good, good,Victoria nodded. We must ensure you receive the best prenatal care. The Sterling heir must be strong and healthy.*

I forced a smile, painfully aware that Victoria’s concern was for the baby, not me. Actually, I was hoping to go into the city today. I’d like

to visit a friend.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed slightly. Is that wise? In your condition?

I’m pregnant, not ill,I replied, keeping my tone light but firm. And I promised Edward I’d check in with him. He’s been worried.

I see.Victoria took a deliberate sip of her tea. Very well. Jack can drive you. But Hannah, her voice lowered, discretion is essential. The press would have a field day if they discovered Finn Sterling’s wife visiting her former guardian. Particularly given theunusual circumstances of your marriage.

I understand,I said, though inwardly I bristled at her implication that my relationship with Edward was somehow shameful.

Speaking of the child,Victoria continued, setting down her teacup with precision, I’ve been thinking about the future. Once the baby is born, I’ll personally oversee their education and development. The right schools, the right connectionseverything to ensure they’ll be prepared to support Finn when he takes his rightful place at Sterling Group.

Finn, who had been silently pushing food around his plate, gave a cold laugh. And will you be helping me with anything else, Grandmother? Perhaps you could help me die too? That seems to be a family specialty.

The silence that followed was deafening. Victoria’s face paled, and her hand trembled slightly as she reached again for her teacup.

Finn, she began, her voice strained, that’s not-

But Finn was already on his feet, his chair scraping harshly against the floor. Without another word, he stalked from the room, leaving a wake of tension behind him.

Victoria stared after him, then suddenly reached across the table and gripped my wrist with surprising strength. You must give birth to that child, Hannah, she said, her voice urgent and almost desperate. The future of the Sterling line depends on it.

I pulled my hand away gently but firmly. I have no intention of doing otherwise.
