Heaven or Hell: Loving My Twisted Billionaire
Chapter 48
Hannah’s POV
“No, I can’t accept that,” I said firmly, handing the check back to Edward. We were sitting in his modest living room, the afternoon sun streaming through the windows. “I appreciate it, I really do, but this is something I need to do on my own.”
Edward’s face creased with concern as he reluctantly took back the check. “Hannah, that locket could go for much more than the estimated price. one hundred thousand dollars is just the starting point at these kinds of auctions.”
Amy, who had taken the afternoon off to help me prepare, nodded in agreement. “Miss Hannah, I could contribute too. Between the three of us-”
I shook my head, cutting her off gently. “I can earn my own money. Whether the locket sells for a hundred thousand or two hundred thousand, it’s my decision how much I can afford.” I looked at them both, hoping they could understand. “If I can buy it, wonderful. If I can’t, then I can’t. But it has to be with my money.
“But it’s your family history, Edward persisted.
“Exactly,” I replied, my voice softening. “That’s why it needs to be me who buys it back. If I use your money, the locket loses its meaning.
Later, as we drove toward Long Island where the Grant mansion stood illuminated against the darkening sky, Edward tried one last time. “Child, you’re not accepting my help, and I respect that. But maybe we should reconsider going tonight.” His hands tightened on the steering wheel. “These people… they’re New York high society. The same people who pretended not to see you after your family’s tragedy.”
I stared out the window at the passing landscape, the elegant homes growing larger and more ostentatious as we neared our destination. T’ve been running
for three years, Edward. Hiding from my past, from who I am.” I turned to him, determination hardening my voice. “It’s time I stopped.*
He sighed but nodded, understanding in his eyes. “Just remember, whatever happens in there, you are Hannah Lancaster. Nothing they say changes that.”
The Grant mansion loomed before us, a sprawling stone structure with gleaming windows and perfectly manicured grounds. Luxury cars lined the circular driveway, and well–dressed attendants directed traffic. I smoothed my dress nervously, checking my reflection in the car’s side mirror. My hair was pulled
back in a simple updo.
At the entrance, a young man in a tuxedo checked names against an iPad. When our turn came, I straightened my spine and spoke clearly: “Hannah
Lancaster of the Boston Lancaster family.”
The young man’s fingers hovered over the screen, his eyes flickering with recognition at the family name. Several nearby guests turned, their conversations faltering as they stared. I felt their eyes assessing my simple dress, mentally calculating its worth and finding it lacking.
After what felt like an eternity but was probably only seconds, he found my name. “Ah yes, Ms. Lancaster. Ms. Grant mentioned you might attend. His tone
suggested surprise that I’d actually shown up.
We waited in the grand entrance hall for nearly fifteen minutes while other guests were promptly escorted inside. I maintained a composed smile, though my cheeks were beginning to ache with the effort. Finally, Olivia appeared, stunning in an emerald gown that probably cost more than my annual salary.
“Hannah! I’m so sorry to keep you waiting.” Her voice carried just enough volume to draw attention. “I had to make sure everything was perfect for our special guests.” The emphasis made it clear I wasn’t among them.
Her gaze shifted to Edward, and her smile turned condescending. And this must be your… boyfriend?” The question hung in the air, deliberately awkward.
Edward stiffened beside me. “I’m Hannah’s guardian, Ms. Grant. Please don’t misunderstand our relationship.”
