Chapter 67
Hannah’s POV
I was walking through the Sterling estate’s corridor, my mind still swimming with Sophia’s accusations about Finn. She had called him the family’s “killing machine,” suggesting he had a pathological interest in hurting others. These words troubled me deeply. I had seen blood on Finn before, heard the rumors, but I couldn’t bring myself to believe he was the monster Sophia described.
My phone vibrated in my pocket, interrupting my thoughts. I pulled it out and saw a reminder I’d set a month ago: “Vacation ends. Return to Sunshine Special Education Center tomorrow.”
I stopped, leaning against the wall. In all the family politics and tension, I’d almost forgotten I had a job, a life that existed outside the Sterling family. A powerful longing suddenly washed over me–a desire to return to that simple, meaningful world where I was valued and needed.
But what would leaving the Sterling estate mean? How would Finn react? What would Victoria say? Yet returning to work might be my chance to reclaim some sense of self–worth, a temporary escape from this pressure cooker
environment.
At dinner, I decided to broach the subject with Victoria. She sat at the head of the long table, dressed in an elegant suit, methodically enjoying her meal.
“I’d like to return to work,” I said directly. “Tomorrow is my scheduled shift at the Sunshine Special Education
Center.”
Victoria’s fork paused midway to her mouth, her sharp eyes immediately locking onto mine. “Work?” Her voice was calm but tinged with displeasure. “I thought we had settled this matter, Hannah. Your responsibility now is here, caring for Finn and preparing for the Sterling family’s future.”
I chose my words carefully. “I understand my responsibilities to Finn and… the baby. But I also have professional
obligations. Those children need me, and I promised I’d return.”
“Your work here is more important,” Victoria set down her fork, her tone firm. “Finn needs you.”
I took a deep breath, deciding to try another approach. “Actually, returning to work would benefit all of us. It
would keep me mentally stimulated, which is good for the baby. And,” I paused, knowing my next words would
catch her attention, “it would help us avoid outside speculation. If I suddenly stop working, people might start asking questions.”

ppp.
Victoria narrowed her eyes, clearly considering my argument. “You’ll return daily?”
“Yes,” I nodded. “My shift is from 8 AM to 3 PM.”
After some consideration, Victoria reluctantly agreed but with conditions: “I’ll arrange for a driver to take you. You are not to travel alone; it’s too dangerous. And any questions about the Sterling family must be avoided.”
I could almost see her concern–she feared I might be approached by William or Sophia outside, turned into their pawn. But for me, this was a victory. “Thank you, Victoria. I promise this won’t affect my care for Finn.”
The next morning, the Sterling family driver dropped me off at the Sunshine Special Education Center. As I walked into the familiar hall, a sense of calm immediately enveloped me. There was none of the Sterling estate’s cold opulence here, replaced instead by modest warmth. The walls were covered with children’s artwork, bright decorations dotted the hallways, and the air smelled of crayons and disinfectant–all things I had deeply missed.
“Hannah!” my colleague Susan exclaimed with surprise, giving me an enthusiastic hug. “We thought you’d be resting another week! The kids will be thrilled!”
The next few hours were pure joy. I interacted with special needs children, helping them read, draw, and develop social skills. Each smile, each small breakthrough, filled me with fulfillment and peace. Here, there were no power games, no family schemes, just the simple act of teaching and learning.
