The food at home was always safe. Nina always made sure of it before every meal. That meant the problem had to be coming from somewhere else.

Sarah looked confused. “Something strange? I don’t think so. I barely left the house, except for today when I went out with Maria. Nina, is there something I should be worried about?”

Nina hesitated for a moment. “It’s nothing, Grandma. You just rest up, okay? I’ve got something to take care of.”

Once Sarah was asleep, Nina headed out.

By the time Nina arrived at the Carter residence, everyone was already asleep. She didn’t want to wake anyone up, so she just called Richard.

Richard had been buried in company business and hadn’t slept a full night in three days. He’d just dozed off when his phone suddenly rang. He was so jumpy these days that the ringtone almost made his heart stop.

Richard shot up in bed, ready to curse out whoever dared to call him at this hour. But when he saw the caller ID, he froze. In a flash, he jumped out of bed, marched straight to Alex’s room, and kicked the door open.

Then he booted Alex right off the bed. “You brat! Did you do something to piss off Ms. Swanson again?”

Alex was dead asleep when he got kicked. Before he could even process what was happening, he saw his dad standing there, eyes blazing.

Alex blinked, totally lost. “Dad, what’s wrong?”

Richard said, “You tell me! If you hadn’t pissed off Ms. Swanson, why would she be calling me in the middle of the night? You brat, how many times have I told you to watch your damn attitude? Did you ever listen?”

Alex was totally dumbfounded. “Dad, what are you talking about When did I ever piss off Ms. Swanson? I even helped her teach Julian a lesson today. She was really pleased with me.”

Richard froze. “You didn’t mess with her?”

“Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t dare.” Alex looked like he was about to cry. “I’m just trying to stay on her good side as much as possible. Why would I ever risk pissing her off?

“Julian’s whole family went bankrupt just for messing with her. Do you think I’m crazy?”

“The Mercer family went bankrupt?” Richard was completely stunned.

The news about the Mercer family going bankrupt hadn’t gotten out yet, so Richard was still in the dark.

“Yeah, it’s just-” Alex started to explain.

But Richard waved him silent and grabbed the phone that was still ringing. “Ms. Swanson, sorry, I was asleep. Is there something you need?”

Alex’s mouth twitched. He honestly wondered if the bootlicker talking to Nina was even the same guy who’d just kicked him out of bed.

“What? You’re at our front door?” Richard suddenly shouted. “I-I be right there.”

After hanging up, Richard paced nervously, muttering, “She’s actually come herself? Is she here to give us a hard time?”

into action, bustling around to prepare for her arrival.

Richard personally opened the front door, greeting her with utmost respect. “Ms. Swanson, please come in.”

Nina glanced at the busy Carter family and pressed her lips together. “Sorry for bothering you.”

“No, not at all,” Richard said, practically bowing as he ushered Nina inside.

Once Nina was settled on the couch, Richard asked nervously, “Ms. Swanson, did one of my clueless family members piss you off?”

“Relax. I’m not here for trouble. I need you to hit up Scarlet on the dark web. I’ve got something important to ask her,” Nina

said.

Richard let out a huge sigh of relief. “I’ll get in touch with her right away.”

As long as it wasn’t someone from his family who’d ticked her off Richard could breathe easy.

He had no clue who Scarlet was, but the only big shot he’d ever reached out to on the dark web was that one. So Richard didn’t dare to drag his feet.
