In the Swanson residence, Martin opened his door, glanced around nervously, then quietly closed it and made his way to Vivian’s room.

Vivian and Lily were chatting when Martin burst in, looking totally panicked. “Mom, what should I do? Nina is really trying to ruin me,” Martin said.

Martin was on edge. Ever since Nina said she’d get revenge and start with him, he’d been jumpy. By all rights, he shouldn’t be afraid of Nina, But for some reason, whenever he looked into her eyes, he just got scared.

Martin wondered, I’m her brother. Why will Nina want to take me down? What’s in it for her if she ruins me?

Vivian frowned, “Why are you freaking out? She’s just trying to scare you. Even if Nina really wants revenge, it’s me she’d go after. I wasn’t nice to her back then. What’s that got to do with you?”

Vivian just shrugged, clearly not bothered by Nina’s threats at all “Besides, even if she wants revenge, she’d have to be able to pull it off. All she ever does is throw a fit. What else can she actually do?”

“But she’s got Ryan and Elaine on her side,” Martin yelled. “Those two alone could destroy me.”

Vivian looked up, fixing Martin with a stern gaze. “You’re acting off today. Are you hiding something from me?”

Martin’s eyes darted nervously. “No, I just can’t shake the fear that Ryan will come after me. With the way things are, I don’t stand a chance against him.”

“Martin, if you can’t fight back, just keep your head down for now,” Lily said, getting up to pour him a glass of red wine.

Martin took the glass and gave her a questioning look. “What do you mean?”

Lily smirked. “Nina’s really after me. She blames me for stealing more than ten years of her life, and she resents you and Mom for always protecting me. Besides Ryan and Elaine, she doesn’t have anyone backing her up.”

Lily took a calm sip of wine. “Even if Ryan and Elaine come after you, they’ll have to think about Nina. You’re her brother, they won’t go too far. Just don’t start anything with her; be a little nicer.”

Lily flashed a sly smile. “Show her a bit of kindness, and all those grudges just fade away.”

Martin looked up at Lily and felt as if she were a total stranger. For a moment, he wondered if he’d ever really known her. The gentle, obedient girl was gone; only cold calculation stared back.

Martin was silent for a long moment and said, “Don’t underestimate Nina.” Something in his gut said Nina was far more than she let on.

Martin thought, ‘If Nina were just some reckless girl, maybe I could handle her. But if she’s got brains, that’s what really

scares me.

Lily sneered, “Martin, don’t let her get in your head. Nina grew up around bar girls; her only skill set is batting her lashes and hustling drinks. That’s how she hooked Ryan.”

Lily lifted her gaze. “Ryan can have any woman he wants. Nina’s just a temporary thrill. Once he’s bored, she’s trash. He’s leaving Riverdale soon, so quit worrying about him. After that, only Elaine’s left, and she’s harmless.”

Martin asked, “Ryan’s leaving Riverdale? How do you know that?”

“Don’t ask how I know. Just do what I say, and Nina won’t be able to lay a finger on you.” Lily set her glass down.
