Before Vivian could finish, Lily tugged at her sleeve, shooting her a look, signaling her to look over.

Vivian looked up and saw Barry walking over to Nina.

Barry exchanged a few words with Nina before quietly leaving the party hall.

Vivian rose without missing a beat, her face composed. She said, “Lily, come with me. I need to change.”

Lily stood up right away and linked arms with Vivian, escorting her out.

The rest of the Swansons sat there, grim-faced, picking at the gourmet food that now tasted like cardboard.

Outside the hotel, Vivian and Lily hurried after Barry, trying to catch up.

“Barry!” Lily called out, almost jogging to catch up. She said, “Please wait a moment.”

Barry turned around, and when he saw Lily’s face, he was momentarily stunned. He asked, “Who are you?”

He thought, ‘Why does this girl look so much like Nina?’

“I’m Nina’s sister, Lily. I received an invitation to interview for your apprentice program before,” Lily said with a polite smile.

“Lily?” Barry blinked, a bit confused. He couldn’t recall her.

Lily said, “Barry, I really want to become your apprentice. Would you consider making an exception and accepting me ahead of time?”

She paused, then added, “This is also at Nina’s request.”

Barry was taken aback. He asked, “She wants me to take you on as my apprentice?”

He thought, ‘That can’t be right.

‘Nina’s way better at piano than I am. Shouldn’t she be the one teaching her own sister?’

Lily replied, “Yes. I told her I wanted to be your apprentice, but she said she was too busy with Grandma’s birthday party to talk to you, so she told me to find you myself.

Barry hesitated, then nodded. He said, “Alright, since Nina put in a word for you, I guess I can bend the rules and take you in.”

He paused, then said, “Let me talk to Nina about when, then we’ll set up the ceremony.”

Lily’s face changed slightly. She quickly said, “Nina’s been swamped lately. My aunt and cousin just got back from Betrico, and it’s been ages since the whole family’s gotten together. Nina really wants to spend time with

everyone.

“She told me earlier that we don’t need to run the apprenticeship ceremony by her. We can just set it up

ourselves.”

After thinking it over, Barry said, “Alright then. Get ready and come with me to Betrico. I’ll introduce you to some of the other apprentices while we’re there.”

“Okay, thank you, Barry,” Lily said.

After Barry left, Vivian finally showed up. She asked, “Lily, how did it go?”

On her way over, Vivian had bumped into an old acquaintance who just wouldn’t let her leave, so afraid she’d miss Barry, she’d sent Lily ahead.

“He agreed,” Lily replied, looking anything but pleased.

She was finally going to be Barry’s apprentice, but she couldn’t muster even a hint of excitement.
