Loren slumped back into the sofa, looking utterly defeated. “I finally found her, and I thought I could finally bring her home. But now, I’m living every day in anxiety and fear, just waiting for her to come back.

Loren closed his eyes, and after a long silence, he stood up and gave Nina a deep bow.

Nina quickly moved out of the way.

He said, “Ms. Swanson, first of all, thank you for saving my life. If you ever need anything in the future, the Carroll family will have your back, no matter what.

“Also, I know you’re incredibly capable, so please, do your best to keep an eye on Shirley. If you hear anything about her, let me know right away. I promise I’ll look after myself and stay alive until the day she returns.

Loren paused, and then said, “I discovered Shirley has a daughter, but I have no idea where she is. Do you know?”

Nina raised an eyebrow. “You want to bring her home to the Carrolls?”

“That’s right,” Loren replied, his face solemn. “I wasn’t there for Shirley when she needed me, but I want to do right by my granddaughter.”

Nina was quiet for a long time. “She’s living with the Hawthornes. Whether they’ll let you take her in, I can’t say. You’ll have to talk to Mr. Hawthorne about it. Her real dad is still around, and he has custody.”

“Can you get in touch with the Hawthornes now? I want to pick her up right away,” Loren urged.

Nina considered for a moment. “Alright, I’ll call Mr. Hawthorne and ask him about it…”

Before Nina could finish, her phone started ringing.

It was an unknown number.

But this was her private line. Hardly anyone had this number.

Nina picked up.

On the other end, a choked, tearful voice pleaded, “Aunt Nina, can you help me? I really don’t want to stay at the Hawthorne residence anymore.”

“With Shirley missing, her daughter is all she has left. I have to protect her. Ms. Swanson, please, let me come with you,” Loren pleaded.
