When she finished, Nina turned to Jeffrey. “Uncle Jeffrey, you’re in charge of picking out the talent. You know the folks back home best, so anyone with real skills-bring them in.

“The pharmaceutical company is our number one priority right now. Don’t stress about the budget, just get those new meds developed ASAP.”

“Got it,” Jeffrey said.

Jeffrey could hardly believe this was real. It all felt like a dream.

He used to think he’d be stuck in that small village forever, never able to leave.

But Nina not only got him out of there, she even let him work on developing new medicines.

After all these years, his dream was finally coming true in middle age.

Once Nina had finished laying everything out, she gave Waverly a lingering look.

Then she rose and strode out.

Just as she stepped outside, a luxury car pulled up right in front of her.

Three people got out of the car.

Nina frowned. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Sorry, Ms. Swanson,” Cheney said, sounding helpless. “I really couldn’t talk my dad out of it. He insisted on coming to Riverdale to see you.”

Nina didn’t say a word. She checked Loren’s pulse first, and then finally spoke up. “No medicine in the world can save someone who’s hell-bent on self-destruction.”

Loren, supported by Cheney, managed a weak smile. “Sorry to trouble you. I knew you’d be upset about me coming, but I had no idea when you’d be back in Roveilia, so I couldn’t wait.

“I had to come see you myself. There are some things I need to confirm with my own eyes.”

Nina knew exactly what he wanted to ask. She paused for a moment, and then said, “Come in.”

With that, she turned and walked back inside.

“Nina, did you forget about me?” Philip looked like he was about to cry his eyes out, his face full of grievance.

He’d been stuck in Roveilia for days, counting the days and nights, just waiting for Nina to come pick him up, but she never showed.

He kept pestering Paul for Nina’s contact info, but Paul just wouldn’t give it to him.

If Loren hadn’t decided to come to Riverdale, Philip had no clue how much longer he’d be left hanging.

And now, after all that trouble to get here, Nina didn’t even spare him a glance.
