She set down her teacup and walked over to David, locking eyes with him. “I don’t get why Scarlet fell for you, but I guess you must have had something she loved.

“Maybe I can see a hint of what she saw in you, just a little.

“I hope you stop being an idiot from now on.” Nina tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, her tone steady and unhurried.

She never had any respect for David.

But even though David had been so foolish, letting his own daughter go through hell for so many years, at least he’d always stayed true to Scarlet.

Man, he’d been clueless, getting played for years.

David looked up at her.

There was something in Nina’s eyes, something he hadn’t seen before.

Back then, he never would’ve caught on.

But now, it was like his brain finally switched on. He got what Nina was saying, loud and clear.

David clenched his fists, his face grim and determined. “I don’t need you to remind me. I know what I have to do.”

Nina curved her lips into a slight smile, then turned to Edward. I’m taking Miranda with me.”

Before she could finish, David cut in, “No way! She is my daughter. You can’t just take her!”

Nina shot him a cold look, her voice icy. “Do you really think I’m asking for your permission?”

David was stunned by Nina’s glare and instinctively stepped back his voice losing its edge. “I know I messed up before. I owe Miranda. I want to make things right.”

Before he could finish, Miranda interrupted him. “I don’t need anything from you, Mr. Hawthorne. From now on, you and I are nothing.”

David’s heart ached. “Miranda-”

He tried to say more, but Miranda cut him off. “Don’t start with the apologies, the regrets, or the promises to fix things. I don’t want to hear it.

“You can’t undo all the pain I’ve been through. You destroyed the image of the great dad I thought I had. I don’t want to forgive you. Not now. Maybe not ever.”

She knew it wasn’t all David’s fault.

But no one could ever understand just how unfair it all felt to he

She had a father, but it was like she never had a dad at all.

If Nina hadn’t been there, David would’ve broken her a long time ago.

All the pain she’d endured over the years couldn’t be erased by a simple apology.

Seeing Miranda like this, David suddenly burst into tears. “I’m the worst! I really am! Miranda, you have every right to hate me. 1-”

“Enough!” Edward snapped. “Stop crying. If Miranda doesn’t want your apology, don’t embarrass yourself any further

Then he turned to Miranda. “Miranda, I’m in no position to make you stay. Go with Nina. It’s better than staying here with us. But remember, if you ever want to come back, our doors will always be open for you.”

Miranda finally lost control and started crying in front of Edward. “I’m sorry, Grandpa. Please forgive me for not being able to stay with you right now. I’ll come back. When I’m stronger, I’ll return to the Hawthorne family.”

“Alright,” Edward said, fighting back tears. “I’ll be waiting for you

Edward didn’t want to keep talking about all this heartbreak, so he turned to Loren. “Sorry for making a spectacle of ourselves in front of you. Our first meeting turned out to be such a disaster. I’m too embarrassed to face you all.”

He’d just learned that Loren was Miranda’s grandfather.

After everything that happened, he felt like he couldn’t even look Loren and his family in the eye.

Loren took Edward’s hand. “Don’t say that. If you can handle this that’s all the explanation we need. Now that Miranda’s got a better place to go, let’s not get hung up on it.”

He’d been pretty pissed off at first.

But Edward had handled the situation well.

Most of his anger had faded.

At the end of the day, Edward hadn’t done anything wrong, really.

This was the best possible outcome.

“You all came in such a hurry, and now you’re leaving just as quickly. I didn’t get to give you a proper welcome. Next time. let’s really sit down and have a drink together,” Edward said.

“Sounds good!” Loren replied.

After a bit of small talk, Nina took Miranda and left the Hawthorne residence.
