When she got back to the Swanson residence, she texted Max, telling him she was going to sleep and not to let anyone disturb her.
At breakfast, Sarah noticed Nina hadn’t come downstairs yet and started to worry that something might be wrong, so she asked Anna to go check on her.
After all, Nina never slept in.
But before Anna could even make it upstairs, Max stopped her and told her not to wake Nina.
Sarah had no idea Nina had gone out last night. She just figured Nina had stayed up late handling some stuff.
But when Nina still hadn’t gotten up by afternoon, Sarah started to get worried.
“What’s wrong with Nina? Why is she sleeping so long?” Sarah asked, her eyes fixed anxiously on the stairs.
Anna poured Sarah a cup of coffee and said softly, “Max said she didn’t get back until dawn. She’s probably just exhausted and needs the rest. Don’t worry.”
Sarah fell silent for a few seconds. “Something’s bothering Nina.”
When Nina was a kid, whenever she had something on her mind, she’d shut herself in her room, stay up all night, and keep it up for a whole week. It always took her a long time to get back to normal after that.
Anna hesitated. “Should I go check on her?”
Sarah thought for a moment and then said, “No, let her rest. She’s been working herself to the bone for this family lately.
“Good thing Jeffrey’s taking care of things at the pharma company, so she doesn’t have to worry about it. Otherwise, she’d be even more worn out.”
After a pause, Sarah added, “Let the kitchen know to keep the food warm, so Nina can have a hot meal when she wakes up.”
“Okay,” Anna replied.
Just as Anna headed to the kitchen, Linda and Luna walked in.
Linda was carrying a thermos. “Nina’s still not up?”
Sarah gave her a skeptical look. “When did you and Nina get so close?”
Linda had already come by to check on Nina four times today.
Linda looked a bit uneasy. She set the thermos on the table, sat down next to Sarah, and hooked her arm

around Sarah’s. “Come on. I’m her aunt Linda. Of course, I am close to her.

“She’s been back for a long time, and I haven’t really done anything for her yet. I got up early this morning to make her some soup, just to help her get her strength back.”
Sarah just stared. ‘Does she really expect anyone to buy that?’ Sarah thought.
Linda squirmed under Sarah’s stare and then turned away. “Luna, go tell Laura to keep the soup warm and give it to Nina when she wakes up.”
Luna nodded and took the soup to the kitchen.
Luna was just about to enter the kitchen when Nina came down.
Luna saw Nina and broke into a smile. “Nina, you’re finally up! Mom made some soup for you. Come and have it while it’s hot!”
Nina blinked in surprise, then looked over at Sarah and Linda on the couch.
As soon as Sarah saw Nina come downstairs, she quickly got up and called out, “Anna, bring out the food!”
After saying that, she reached for Nina’s hand. “We knew you needed some rest, so we made sure not to disturb you. Come on, let’s get you something to eat.”
Linda immediately stood up, took the thermos from Luna, opened it, and placed it in front of Nina. She said gently, “Nina, I made this soup this morning. Give it a try and see if you like it.”
Nina glanced at the table full of dishes and the soup in front of her, her usually cool eyes turning a little misty. She took a sip, pushed down the odd feeling inside, and her voice softened. “It’s delicious. Thank you, Aunt Linda.”
Linda broke into a smile. “As long as you like it! If you ever want more, just let me know, and I’ll make it for
you.”
Nina nodded and kept to herself while eating.
Just then, Vivian and Lily came back in from outside.
Seeing Sarah and Linda fussing over Nina at the table, Vivian snorted and gave a mocking smile. “Well, well, Linda, I thought you couldn’t stand Nina. And now look at you, actually making her soup yourself?”
Linda was about to snap back, but Vivian cut her off. “Yeah, I guess money really does change people. Now that she’s the CEO of SN Corporation, you’re all trying to cozy up to her.
“But let me give you a piece of advice. Don’t go overboard with flattery. Nina never forgets when someone crosses her, and these little favors of yours aren’t going to win her over.”
Linda snapped, “Vivian, seriously, what kind of mother talks about her own daughter like that?”
