Linda opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but ended up biting back her words. “Guess I’ll just try to treat her better from now on.”
Luna smiled and didn’t say anything else.
When Nina walked out, Simon’s car was still parked outside.
She didn’t get in. Instead, she popped open the trunk and grabbed a beer.
Leaning against the car, she looked up at the sky.
The moon was full tonight. It felt like the moon was showering the whole world with warmth, but none of that warmth ever reached her.
Nina took a swig of her beer, looking over at the main house in the distance, her mind heavy with memories.
Simon noticed Nina still hadn’t gotten in, so he stepped out of the car. “Are you okay?”
Simon had been with Nina long enough to know when something was bothering her.
Nina didn’t say anything. She downed her beer in one gulp, chucked the empty can into the trash, and then turned to Simon. “How long have you and your girlfriend been together?”
“Seven years,” Simon replied as he grabbed a beer, came over, and leaned against the car beside her.
“Seven years? That’s pretty long,” Nina said. “Ever thought about tying the knot?”
“I’m planning to pop the question on our anniversary next month,” Simon said.
Simon was several years older than Nina, and honestly, sometimes he couldn’t even remember how he’d ended up so willingly putting his trust in this younger girl.
Nina glanced at Simon with a small smile. “So, what do you want as a gift? I’ll get it for you!”
Simon grinned. “How about you get Ms. Sinclair to make a custom wedding dress for my girlfriend?”
Nina laughed. “Sure.”
After that, the two of them just went quiet, each sipping their beer in silence.
They didn’t know how long passed before Nina suddenly asked, “Have you ever thought about having kids?”
“Of course I have,” Simon replied. “You know Belle’s pretty shy. She doesn’t have many friends. She’s always telling me she wants a baby.
“But I feel like we shouldn’t have kids before we’re married. It wouldn’t be good for her reputation. So, once we get married, I want to have a kid right away.”

While he talked about Belle, Simon’s face softened with pure happiness.
“Would
you love
your kid?” Nina’s voice was almost hollow, totally emotionless.

Simon replied, “Nina, what are you even saying? Of course, I’d love my kid. What parent doesn’t love their
own…”
But before he could finish, Simon suddenly stopped, looking awkwardly at Nina. “Sorry, that’s not what I
meant.”
“It’s fine,” Nina said with a faint smile. “See? Everyone always says parents love their kids, but my family? We’re the exception.”
Simon didn’t say anything. He didn’t know what to say.
For a while, neither of them spoke. They just drank their beers in silence.
Together, they finished off both cases of beer Simon had stocked in the trunk.
The sky was just starting to turn pale with the first light of dawn.
Nina tossed the last empty can into the trash and headed back inside.
Simon watched her walk away, letting out a deep sigh.
He just couldn’t wrap his head around how someone as incredible as Nina could have parents who never loved her.
Whenever Nina was in a bad mood, she’d end up staying up all night or sleeping at weird hours.
She’d had headaches ever since she was little.
He thought, ‘If this keeps up, Nina probably wouldn’t be getting any real sleep for a while.
Simon hesitated for a moment, then pulled out his phone and called Ryan. “Ryan, Nina’s in a bad mood. She drank a lot and stayed up all night.”
