Martin never saw it coming. He was so sure Nina would die at his hands today.
But in just a heartbeat, he found himself surrounded and under attack.
Martin didn’t even have time to think. He just took off running.
“Escape? Do you think I’ll let you get away so easily?” Elaine narrowed her eyes, then took off after Martin.
Nina didn’t move. She just shot Waverly a cold glare.
Nina’s eyes seemed to melt into the night, hiding any trace of emotion. Waverly couldn’t read Nina’s face at all, but the dread inside her only grew stronger.
“N–Nina,” Waverly stammered, desperate to save her own skin. “I know everything Martin did. I’ll tell you all of it. Just please, let me go, okay?”
Nina shoved her hands in her pockets, her gaze icy as she looked at Waverly. Then she let out a soft, almost mocking laugh. “Aunt Waverly, no need to rush. I’ll settle the score with you soon enough.”
As soon as Nina finished speaking, Elaine, who had gone to chase Martin, returned. Some officers were trailing behind her.
Elaine approached Nina and said, “He got away.”
Elaine snorted with a mocking laugh. “What a fool. He really thought I was after him. He ran so fast that he nearly lost his footing and went flying off the cliff.”
Nina let out a soft, teasing laugh. “So, did you get your kicks today?”
Elaine casually tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and shrugged. “Not bad. I feel a lot less bottled up now.”
Even after Nina broke it all down for her and Elaine realized her dad hadn’t cheated, she still couldn’t really feel any better.
Back then, just thinking her dad might’ve cheated was eating her up inside. And with her mom crying nonstop, the whole place felt heavy and dark.
After Elaine and Ethan got their marriage license and she moved in with the Swanson family, things did get a bit better for her. But that cloud hanging over her heart never really lifted.
Nina must’ve sensed something was off with Elaine’s mood. So this time, Nina made sure to bring Elaine along, just to help her blow off some steam.
After duking it out with those people, all that pent–up frustration had finally melted away.
Nina nodded, just as the officers had already pinned Waverly down.
The lead officer walked up to Nina, glanced at the Nicholson family members sprawled on the ground, and asked, “Ms. Swanson, what do you want us to do with these guys?”
“Bring them in. I’ll handle the interrogation myself,” Nina replied
The lead officer nodded and pointed at Waverly. “What about her?”
Nina’s brow twitched almost imperceptibly, her voice cold and low. “You really need me to tell you how to handle something this simple?”
“No, but she’s-” The lead officer lowered his head. He trailed of not finishing his sentence.

Nina shot him a look. “Huh?”
The lead officer flinched. “The evidence is solid. We’ll deal with her by the book.”

“If you can’t do your job, I’ll get someone who can.” Nina gave him a cool, emotionless look. With that, she turned and walked away.
The lead officer let out a long sigh of relief.
One of the team members stepped up and asked, “Sir, are we seriously doing this by the book? I mean, that’s Ms. Swanson’s
aunt.
The lead officer gave him a swift kick. “Didn’t you hear Ms. Swanson? Do it by the book!”
It made sense why the team member asked that question. Even the lead officer thought Nina would cover for Waverly.
With all the years Nina had served the country, she could’ve easily pulled some strings to shield her own people.
But he missed one thing. Nina always put the country first. Family came second, no exceptions.
Not just Waverly, even if Sarah ever broke the law, Nina wouldn’t blink before choosing justice over blood.
Nina and Elaine got on their motorcycles.
Elaine glanced at Nina’s face and asked, “You’re really just going to send her to jail? Nina, that’s not your usual style!”
Nina tilted her head and shot Elaine a look. “Oh? Then what do you think I’d do?”
