Elaine added; “You have no clue what she went through after barely escaping with her life from that mountain. But even those rough days were happier than living in the Swanson residence, because at least nobody was abusing her anymore.”

Elaine continued, “You think Nina and Ethan should just forgive you like it’s nothing, all because Nina’s so talented. Maybe you’ll say you changed your attitude for some other reason, but e real with yourself.

“If Nina hadn’t been so amazing, would you have ever bothered change how you treated her?”

James was completely at a loss for words, just sitting there in silence. Truth was, he’d asked himself that exact question before. His answer was obviously no.

If Nina had been nothing but trouble, always stirring up drama, he wouldn’t have changed a thing. In fact, he’d probably have hated her even more.

Elaine shot James a look and let out a cold laugh. “Stop trying to guilt-trip Nina. You weren’t there for any of the important moments in her life.

“As far as she’s concerned, you’re not even her dad. And honestly, she’s long past needing a father anyway.”

Elaine added, “And Nina’s not some kid nobody cares about. Even without you, we cherish her just as much, maybe even more. The way things are between you and her? That’s honestly for the best.”

After Elaine finished, she led Nina and Ethan out of the room.

Sarah glanced at James, let out a sigh, and without saying a word she left as well.

The others just traded looks, said nothing, and gathered up their kids before leaving.

James was left standing there, all alone.

Nina and Elaine didn’t sleep a wink that night.

When they woke up, it was already evening.

When Nina woke up, the first thing she did was check her phone, her expression growing tense with worry.

Usually, Ryan would let her know right away, either with a call of a text, after he took care of things.

But now, it had been over ten hours, and he hadn’t sent a single message or called her even once.

‘Could it be that Matthew slipped away?’ Nina thought.

With someone as capable as Ryan, nabbing Matthew should’ve been a walk in the park.

Nina steadied herself and dialed Ryan’s number.

She called Ryan again and again, over ten times, but Ryan still didn’t pick up. With every unanswered call, Nina’s frown deepened.

Just then, a frantic knock rattled the door, and Anna’s panicked ice called out from the hallway. “Ms. Swanson, are you awake? Someone just showed up. She’s covered in blood and keeps asking for you!”

Nina sprang out of bed and rushed to the door, grabbing Anna the arm. “Who is it?”

“It’s a young woman, probably in her twenties. She wouldn’t say Her name. She just kept insisting she had to see you. looks really badly hurt,” she replied. Anna shuddered just remen bering the woman.

When Nina saw the person downstairs, she was stunned. “Iris?”

Nina had always had a feeling Iris was still alive, but no matter what she did, she could never track her down.

Nina quickly regained her composure and walked briskly toward Iris. “What happened?”

“Nina,” Iris called out. She grabbed Nina with her blood-stained ands, her whole body trembling. “Scarlet’s in trouble
