Iris explained, “We were being hunted in Frontierland. Scarlet sacrificed herself to protect us. She went down with the enemy, using a small bomb she made herself. But we couldn’t find her body.”

Iris’s voice trembled. “We searched everywhere, but we couldn’t find her—”

Before she could finish, Iris collapsed.

Sarah was shaken by the scene. She jumped to her feet. “Get her inside, now!”

Given how bad Iris’s injuries were, she needed surgery, but she was way too hurt to be moved.

Nina steadied herself, then picked up the phone and called Philip.

Philip came over as fast as he could when he got Nina’s call. He brought Loren and Melody with him.

Miranda was at school, so she didn’t come.

As soon as Loren saw Nina, he rushed over and asked, “Nina, is something wrong with Shirley?”

“Are you scared?” Nina asked, her voice icy.

Philip met her icy gaze and couldn’t help but shiver. “No!”

Nina averted her eyes, her face blank. “Steady your breathing, and just follow my lead.”

The surgery lasted a grueling five hours.

When Nina finally stepped out of the room, her steps were unsteady.

The Swansons waited outside the whole time.

As soon as Sarah saw Nina, she hurried over. “Nina, how is she? Did she manage it?”
