Chapter 407
“Waverly?” Martin and Matthew both stared, completely dumbfounded.
They thought, ‘What the hell is going on? How is Waverly even here? Wasn’t she supposed to be in custody?’
Martin snapped out of it after a moment and asked grimly, “What are you doing here?”

He thought, ‘Did the Nicholson family help her out? No way. They only reached out to me and said they’d get Matthew and me out. They never mentioned Waverly’
Waverly explained, “I tried to kill myself in prison, got sent to the hospital, and made a break for it when the guards were distracted.”
She thought she was done for. Then she overheard a cellmate talking about a way out.
That lit a fire in her. She promised a lot before her cellmate told her how to get out.
That woman even slipped her a packet of powder, saying just a sprinkle would knock anyone out cold.
She felt nervous on the way to the hospital, thinking maybe the powder wouldn’t work, but it hit harder than she imagined. Just a pinch, and they passed out.
She didn’t waste a second, scrambled out the window, and made her
escape.
Only she knew just how much hell she’d been through to get here.
Footsteps were closing in behind them. Matthew leaned in to Martin. “Let’s get inside first.”
Martin shot Waverly a quick glance, then signaled to Matthew with his eyes.
Matthew knocked on the door.
After a moment, the door swung open, and a man stepped out. “Come on in.”
With that, the man led them inside.
Waverly felt a heavy weight lift off her chest. At least they still saw her as a family. She wasn’t completely alone in this mental hospital.
As soon as they stepped inside, Waverly felt freezing cold all over, like walking into some ice cave, and the place was eerily quiet.
When the man led them into the ward, Martin’s eyes widened at the sight. A packed room full of patients in hospital gowns, all crowded together.
Some huddled in corners, muttering to themselves; others banged their heads against the walls; and a few drooled upon seeing them. “Yum. They smell delicious.”
Martin’s temper flared. “Didn’t they tell you? I want a private room.”
“A private room? Are you kidding me?” Harlan, the man who led them here, sneered.
Martin snapped, “I’m not joking. I-”
Martin turned his head and saw Harlan smiling at him with a twisted, almost maniacal grin.

Martin instinctively took a step back.
Just as he was about to speak, Harlan’s laughter sharpened. “Welcome to hell.”

The piercing laughter set Martin’s nerves on edge, and for some reason, a surge of terror he’d never known before hit him. “W-What are you doing?”
In his head, Martin was cursing Lawrence. He thought, ‘Couldn’t he have picked a halfway normal place? Who are these people? They’re so creepy.
Harlan sneered. “Of course, we’re gonna show our new friends a hell of a welcome.”
Martin felt his gut telling him something was wrong. He reached for Harlan, but the guy just threw him to the ground.
Before Martin could even process what was happening, a mob of patients swarmed in, surrounding them from all sides.
One of the men cackled, sitting right on top of Martin and pinning him down. “Daddy left you here to play with us. How dare you strike at him? We’ll avenge him.”
Martin felt like he was about to suffocate.
“Let go of Martin,” Matthew yelled, scrambling up from the floor.
However, before he could reach the man, he was grabbed.
A small man wielding an iron rod hopped in front of them, grinning. “Here’s The Gauntlet.”
Waverly was terrified, just standing there, too scared to move.
“First, let’s see how tough you guys are,” the man said, raising the metal rod high and slamming it down hard onto Martin’s feet.
Martin screamed in agony, clutching his leg and stumbling backward. “Who do you think you are? Aren’t you afraid the Nicholson family will kill you?”
The man just cracked a wicked grin. “He’s so bold. I like him. Let me deal with him.”
And with a sick grin, he brought the rod crashing down on Martin’s other leg, then onto his hands.
In less than a minute, Martin’s arms and legs were broken.
Martin’s face no longer held anger; it was replaced entirely by sheer terror. He tried to run, but his arms and legs were useless.
Matthew had always thought of himself as a lunatic, but he never imagined there were people crazier than him in this world. He usually feared nothing, but now he was scared out of his mind.
He ignored Martin and sprinted away, but the next second, someone smacked him in the back with a rod.
A ripping pain shot through his back.
The guy behind Matthew snickered darkly. “These newbies are just what we needed, Can’t wait to kick off The Gauntlet.”
Matthew felt his skin crawl at that twisted grin. Right now, there was only one thing on his mind,
Run as fast as possible. Otherwise, he would die here.

He had a horrible feeling. He’d be tortured to death.
Matthew’s body took over his mind. He bolted as fast as he could.
The man behind him cackled even louder, the sound chasing after him.
Matthew’s fear intensified, yet he dared not stop.

However, no matter how fast he ran, he realized he just couldn’t escape. He thought, ‘What’s going on? Damn it.’
Just then, the man behind him caught up, swinging the iron rod onto his feet.
Matthew howled in agony and hit the floor instantly.
The man approached slowly. Matthew braced himself with his hands, dragging his broken leg as he desperately backed
away.
He stammered, “Please, let me go. I’ll give you lots of money.”
The man grinned, his eyes gleaming with madness. “Money? What’s that? Can you buy candy with it?”
“Yes.” Matthew’s eyes went wide with hope. “Just let me go, and I’ll get you all the candy you could ever want.”
The man paused, looking almost tempted, but then his grin faded, and he pouted. “No way. Dr. Kingston says candy is bad for teeth. You’re lying to me. You’re a bad guy.”
Matthew didn’t even get a chance to beg before the man brought the metal rod crashing down on his other leg, paint exploding through him.
Matthew screamed like an animal being slaughtered.
The man’s excitement spiked at the sound of Matthew’s screams. He didn’t let Matthew get a single word out before he brought the rod crashing down on his hands.
As he kept smashing, he giggled like a maniac. “This test went pretty well. Dr. Kingston will praise me for this, right?”
Suddenly, an old voice echoed through the ward. “Well done. Their screams are sweet music to my ears. I love hearing them cry out like that. You’ll get candy as a reward this afternoon.”
The man’s smile twisted with manic glee. He thought, ‘See? Dr. Kingston praised me!
He said, “Dr. Kingston, I remember you talking about your surgery plan before. You’re really a genius. We’ve got new friends now. Let them join in.”
