After Hannah left to get the maps and files, Simon turned to Nina. “Boss, do you think Ryan’s hiding out in one of the nearby villages?”

Before Nina could answer, Simon added, “Hannah’s reliable. If she’s already checked all those villages, Ryan’s definitely not there.”

Nina glanced around. “This has nothing to do with her abilities.

She thought, They don’t just disappear without a trace.

Every medic she stationed in Frontierland went through her special training. They were not just skilled doctors, but they could handle themselves in a fight.

They always flew with parachutes. With their experience, if the pilot got sick, they’d be the first to organize an escape.

Even if they only looked out for themselves and didn’t bother Ryan, there should’ve been some sign of them within a few miles of the crash site.

But now, there wasn’t even a trace of the medics, which meant they didn’t just vanish in the accident. Someone must’ve taken them.

Nina didn’t doubt Hannah’s skills, but if someone was really set on hiding them, even if Hannah checked every village one by one, he might still miss something.

Besides, when she first got here, she’d sensed the presence of parasites.

Parasites were usually only found in Moonshadow.

But now, they’d shown up here in Hillcrest.

She had to think things through more carefully.

Hannah soon returned with the maps and detailed information about the nearby villages.

Nina glanced over the maps, then pointed to a spot on the map and asked Hannah, “Have you been to this place?”

Hannah glanced at it. “Yeah, we’ve been there. But the villagers are pretty hostile to outsiders. All we could do was slip them some cash and ask around, but they just said they hadn’t seen M Foster.”

“So you never actually got inside?” Nina asked, propping her chin on her hand, her mind clearly working.

Hannah paused. “We tried, but we just couldn’t get through. The villagers wouldn’t let anyone in. And the only reason we got even this little bit of info was because we paid them a lot.”

She hesitated, then said, “I also asked around about that village. The people there almost never leave. They live off their own land, and no outsider’s ever been allowed in. I really don’t think Mr. Foster could be hiding there.”

Nina didn’t say a

word.

But Ethan leaned in to look at the village on the map, and his eyes widened in surprise. “Hey, I know this place!”

Nina glanced over at Ethan. “You know this place, Ethan?”

Ethan nodded. “Yeah, one of my college classmates is from that village.”

He paused and said, “Supposedly, she’s the only one from that village to get into college in the last fifty years. But she barely

spoke to anyone at school, so most people just ignored her like she was invisible.”

Ethan thought for a second, then added, “But she was gorgeous.”

Nina looked up. “Gorgeous?”

Elaine drawled, “How pretty are we talking?”

Ethan suddenly felt a chill down his back. He glanced at Elaine, only to see her giving him a cold, lingering stare.

Ethan hurried to explain, “Everyone else said she was pretty, but hot me!”

“Really?” Elaine said, then went quiet.

Ethan sneaked a careful look at Elaine, and for some reason, helt oddly pleased.

He thought, ‘Is she jealous?’

“Ethan, tell us what you know about her,” Nina said, ignoring the looks those two were giving each other.

She needed the exact details about that village.

“Her name’s Veda. Back in college, I helped her out a few times, so she’d chat with me sometimes,” Ethan explained. “She’s from Phoenix Village, the only one from her village to ever get into college. After graduation, she planned to go back home.”

When Ethan first heard Veda say that, he was really taken aback.

Veda was always top of her class and won scholarships every year

With her background, she could’ve easily landed a job at a Fortune 500 company.

But he never thought Veda would actually choose to go back to her village.

He even tried to convince her to reconsider, since it was about her future.

But Veda said it was her fate.

Going back to her village meant she was expected to get married

Ethan just didn’t get it. ‘Why go all the way back home just to get married?

‘Couldn’t she find someone better in the city?’

But Veda insisted, girls from Phoenix Village never marry outsiders.

Her family had already lined up someone for her to marry, so she was set to get married the moment she returned home.

After graduation, Ethan never saw Veda again.

He didn’t even know if she was married.

Nina furrowed her brows, and said, “There’s definitely something strange about that village.”

Elaine nodded. “Exactly. If Phoenix Village’s women never marry outsiders, they only marry within the village. A place this isolated for generations should have lots of inbreeding and its associated issues. But Ethan said Veda was stunning, so she’s probably not a product of that.”

Elaine rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “So when Veda said they don’t marry outsiders, maybe she meant they don’t marry into a family from other villages. But if they’re so unfriendly to outsiders, how does that even work? That’s pretty weird.”

Nina paused for a moment, then looked at Ethan. “So, Ethan, jus how beautiful she is?”

Ethan thought about it. “Honestly, I can’t really put it into words Back in college, someone accidentally snapped a photo of her, and everyone ended up voting her prom queen.”

Ethan really had no idea how to describe what Veda looked like.

To him, all girls looked the same, except for Elaine and Nina.

So in his mind, the only word that fit Veda was “pretty.”

“But Veda said all the girls in her village are good-looking,” Ethan added.

Nina raised an eyebrow. “People who spend their whole lives in tiny farming village. Sure, it’d be normal if you got one real beauty every few decades. But if every girl there is gorgeous.”

That meant the guys marrying these girls weren’t from their own village, or even from Hillcrest.

And those men must be handpicked, and at the very least, good looking themselves.

Otherwise, there was no way they would end up with so many good-looking kids.

Even in those big-shot families, not every kid turned out to be a stunner.

But every single girl in this village was gorgeous.

So there was no way it was just something in their genes.

Simon chimed in, “There’s something off about this map. The whole village only has one entrance. All the back roads are completely blocked.”

Most villages huddled right against the mountains, so no matter which path you took, a dirt trail winding up the hills was never far.

But in this place, even those usual mountain paths were blocked

So in essence, anyone coming into or leaving the village could only go through the main entrance.

If someone tried to sneak in from the back, like over the mountain, it had no chance.

Nina paused for a moment, then said, “Hannah, bring in more people and have them search the area more thoroughly. Tonight, we’re heading out to check out that village.”
