Last night was a disaster–but was it all on him?
If she hadn’t cried and screamed about divorce, none of this would’ve happened.
Sophia watched his face twist through a dozen emotions. She expected nothing.
She yanked her hand free and walked inside without a word.
The parlor blazed with light, bright as day.
Eleanor, Catherine, Daniel, and Bella were already at the table waiting.
Damian’s uncle Bradley and his family weren’t there. Bella mentioned they had gone abroad on vacation.
Good. One less headache to deal with.

But then she saw the gauze wrapped around Sophia’s palm.
Eleanor gasped. “Sophia, what happened to your hand? Ford, get the family doctor. Now!”
Her shout brought everyone rushing over–everyone except Bella, who already knew.
“Ford, don’t.” Sophia stopped him, patting Eleanor’s hand gently.
“Grandma, I just cut myself slicing fruit. Don’t worry, I’ve already had it treated. It’ll be fine in a few days.”
“Good.” Eleanor patted her head affectionately. “Come home more often, Sophia. I’ll have Catherine make you soup–you’re getting too thin.”

No matter how badly Isabelle screwed up, Michael never said a harsh word to her.
Hell, when Connor cheated with Isabelle, he’d actually told Sophia not to fight with her sister–that she was pretty and successful enough to find someone else.
Her own father.
She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Anyone who didn’t know better would have thought she was the one who was adopted.
Connor and Damian had both shown her warmth, made her feel wanted.
But the second she fell, they’d yark it all away–and shove her off a cliff.

Eleanor’s tone was sharp the moment she saw him.
“Grandma, your health’s not great. Don’t stress yourself out.”

“You’re the CEO of Veridian Group. You had an affair scandal with your sister–in–law. How the hell do you face Sophia?”
“Dad, don’t believe that online garbage. Nothing happened between me and Isabelle.”
Damian frowned, voice patient like he was talking to a child.
“I already had PR handle it. You won’t see those articles anymore. Just let it go.”
Just let it go. The audacity. Like she was nothing.
Sophia’s nails dug into her palm so hard it felt like they would draw blood. A wave of silent derision washed over her.
