Her Divorce, His Downfall (Sophia and Damian) novel Chapter 27

Chapter 27

Sophia lay limp in his arms, eyes shut tight, face white as death. Her breathing-so faint he could barely feel it.

His heart seized. A pain he’d never felt before.

Damian swept her up and placed her back on the hospital bed, then rushed out of the room.

“DOCTOR! DOCTOR! She passed out-” he roared.

Chaos erupted in the hospital room.

Michael stood frozen, staring at Damian’s panicked figure, then at the blood-stained settlement letter on the floor. Guilt finally crept across his face.

Just then, a figure in a white coat burst through the door.

“Move!” Connor’s voice was sharp with anger.

He shoved past Damian and the others crowding the bed.

He leaned over Sophia, checking her pupils, her carotid pulse.

“Blood pressure plummeting, pulse weak-acute stress-induced shock from emotional trauma and

physical force. Get her to the ER. Now!”

Connor released the bed’s locking mechanism, barking orders at the nurses who’d followed him in.

They wheeled Sophia out. The ER docs were pros-he trusted them.

When it was done, he wiped the sweat from his brow and turned on them, voice like a whip.

“What did you do to her? She was already injured and weak. What the hell could’ve pushed her to vomit blood and collapse?”

“We didn’t do anything! Just asked her to sign a

settlement letter.”

Rhea, leveraging her position as Connor’s future mother-in-law, spoke casually.

“Who knew the girl would be so stubborn? She refused,

so Michael had no choice. He had someone hold her

down and make her sign.”

agreement still clutched in Michael’s hand.

Rage exploded through him. Screw politeness.

“Uncle Michael!” he roared. “Sophia is your real daughter –your own flesh and blood! Are you really going to drive her to death for another daughter?

“You watched them force her. Watched her cough up blood. What are you, made of stone? If something happens to her, will you ever sleep again?”

Michael hadn’t expected Connor to go off like this. Not in front of everyone.

His face went pale. The hand gripping the settlement agreement trembled. He opened his mouth-but no words came out.

“Connor, how dare you speak to Michael that way!” Rhea snapped, frowning. “Isabelle is your fiancée. Don’t you care about her at all?”

“I care about her, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna let her act out like this.” Connor’s eyes narrowed. “Aunt Rhea, let’s be real-Isabelle turned out this way because of you9 people.”

“You’re taking Sophia’s side?”

Damian stepped forward, blocking Rhea, his expression dark as he stared down the man Sophia used to love.

“The Andersons aren’t yours to judge. I’ll handle this family’s business.”

“You’ll handle it?” Connor let out a bitter laugh, eyes blazing with contempt. “Damian, this is how you handle things? Watching her own father corner her? Watching her humiliated until she’s coughing blood and passing

out?

“That’s your solution? Teaming up with the people hurting her to figure out how to sacrifice her for Isabelle?”

“Connor, watch your mouth!” Damian’s eyes went ice-cold. He grabbed Connor by his white coat collar. “What happens between Sophia and me is none of your business. You’re an outsider.”

“Outsider?” Connor met his glare head-on, unflinching. He yanked Damian’s hand off. His voice came out bitter. “At least I wouldn’t stand by and watch her get trampled, into the dirt! Damian-vou don’t deserve to be her

forget-you betrayed her first three years ago. That’s how I got my chance.”

At the mention of three years ago, Connor’s face changed. Pain flashed through his eyes.

“If you hadn’t stolen her away back then, Sophia never would’ve married you. You bastard!”

“Oh yeah? And you hugging and kissing Isabelle-I forced you to do that?”

Damian’s cold smile didn’t reach his eyes. He caught the wounded look on Connor’s face.

Michael watched his son-in-law and future son-in-law air each other’s dirty laundry, dragging both his daughters’ reputations through the mud.

His face burned. He jumped in.

“Enough! Both of you. Sophia’s still in surgery. Let’s wait by the ER.”

Connor straightened his collar, composed himself, and strode toward the emergency room.

Outside the ER, time crawled. The air felt suffocating.

Damian leaned against the cold wall, eyes locked on that closed door.

Michael and Rhea sat at opposite ends of the bench, expressions miles apart.
