Her Divorce, His Downfall (Sophia and Damian) novel Chapter 55

Chapter 55

Connor hadn’t expected her to ask that question. He froze for a

moment.

After a long pause, he slowly spoke, his voice steady and resolute.

“Sophia, I’m not helping you because of… anything else. I’m helping because it’s the right thing to do. Everything that’s happened to you-the false accusations, the online attacks, someone trying to kill you-

“I’d do the same for anyone. Just because Isabelle’s my fiancée doesn’t mean I’m going to look the other way when something’s wrong. Wrong is wrong.”

Looking into his clear, honest eyes, Sophia suddenly thought of

Damian.

The man who, in her moment of life and death, chose Isabelle without hesitation and turned a blind eye to her.

The stark contrast sent waves crashing through her heart.

She couldn’t tell if what she felt was gratitude, shock, or the overwhelming emotion of being trusted unconditionally by

someone.

Sophia’s throat tightened as she looked at Connor, her eyes slowly reddening with unshed tears.

Seeing this, Connor immediately panicked, thinking her wounds

were causing pain. He reached for the call button. “Are your wounds hurting? I’ll get you some painkill…”

Before he could finish, Sophia gently caught his hand.

She shook her head, sniffled, and fought to push back the tears. “The wounds don’t hurt. My heart… doesn’t hurt as much anymore either. Connor, thank you.”

Hearing this, Connor’s tense nerves finally relaxed, and he let out a long breath of relief.

He couldn’t help but reach up and gently ruffle her hair, just like he used to do back in school, saying warmly, “Don’t thank me. I’m only doing what I should do-what I want to do. Now, don’t overthink things. Get some rest. Build up your strength, because tomorrow or the day after, we’ll probably have a tough battle ahead.”

Sophia nodded obediently, taking the water and pills he handed her before slowly lying down and closing her eyes.

Whether from the medication or the emotional exhaustion of the day, she quickly fell into a deep sleep.

Connor sat by her bedside, watching her intently for a while, making sure she was sleeping peacefully.

He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, whispering, “Good night.”

Then he stood, carefully tucked the blanket around her, and quietly left after closing the door.

Once outside, he dialed his assistant, giving a command. “Arrange for several bodyguards with combat backgrounds. Have them stationed at Sophia’s room immediately.”

Afterward, he went to the hospital’s security center to review the day’s surveillance footage.

Meanwhile, after settling Isabelle, Damian summoned his special assistant, Liam.

He needed to know everything about the young man who had appeared at the hospital and taken Sophia away, as well as all of Sophia’s movements that day.

Liam quickly sent over Garrett’s file.

Damian scrolled through it, studying the photo-a good-looking guy in his early twenties, confident smile, athletic build.

Fitzgerald family, one of LA’s wealthiest. Zero interest in the family business. Into basketball, polo, golf, skiing, and racing. Known around town as a player. Comes off as laid-back and carefree, but graduated from Juilliard. Seems to be treating acting more like a hobby than a real career.

“The Fitzgeralds?” Damian’s brow furrowed.

He remembered meeting Byron Fitzgerald and his eldest son Jackson at Grandma’s birthday party a few years back. He and Jackson had hit it off-they saw eye to eye on business.

He hadn’t realized the Fitzgeralds had a younger son slumming it in Hollywood.

If Garrett was stupid enough to go after Sophia, Damian would make sure the family regretted it.

And conveniently, Jackson had a major deal that was currently running into problems.

But that little trouble was nothing in Damian’s eyes-a minor

issue at best.

Because problems that could be solved with money were never really problems.

And the Hall family never lacked money.
