Her Divorce, His Downfall (Sophia and Damian) novel Chapter 56

Chapter 56

Immediately after, Liam sent over Sophia’s latest updates:

Her wound has been properly treated. Garrett escorted her back to another room. Connor also visited briefly. Both men left shortly after, but Connor left bodyguards stationed outside the door.

A sense of crisis washed over him.

His wife seemed quite popular.

This morning, he’d failed to save her from that lunatic’s hands. She must hate him now.

That look of despair she’d given him was still burned into his

memory.

Damian’s heart clenched painfully.

Ever since he’d broken his promise on his mother-in-law’s memorial day, every choice between Isabelle and Sophia had ended the same way.

Right or wrong aside, she was always the one who got hurt in the end.

As her husband, he was unforgivably at fault.

Pushing down his frustration, Damian gave Liam direct orders: Distract the bodyguards outside her room. Fifty-thousand-dollar bonus.

Liam couldn’t believe his luck.

Apparently his boss had finally developed a conscience and realized how overworked he’d been lately.

Suppressing his wild excitement, Liam immediately agreed and promised to complete the mission.

Damian’s lips curved in self-mockery.

He’d never imagined a day would come when he’d need help just to see his own wife.

But he really didn’t want to wake Sophia. If he disturbed her sleep, forget about seeing her-he’d be lucky to escape without getting punched.

After a few minutes, Liam texted back: Done.

Damian dragged his exhausted body to the hospital room. The hallway was indeed empty.

He gripped the door handle, opened it quietly, and slipped into the dim, peaceful space.

His eyes immediately found Sophia.

Her face was pale as she slept quietly in the bed, her hand wrapped in stark white bandages.

Pain flashed through his eyes. He removed his jacket, went to the bathroom, and splashed cold water on his face.

Returning to the bedside, Damian carefully lay down beside her, extending his arm to gently hold her close.

His warm lips pressed against her delicate collarbone whispered, “I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

The medication made Sophia drowsy. She drifted off, unaware that someone had slipped into bed beside her.

When she shifted in her sleep, she accidentally rolled onto her injured side and gasped.

Immediately, a hand steadied her. Someone leaned close, gently blowing cool air across the bandaged wound while murmuring, “Shh, I’ve got you. It’ll stop hurting.”

The pain did ease. Half-asleep, Sophia instinctively

pressed closer to the warmth beside her and fell back into

unconsciousness.

Damian gazed down at her peaceful expression, tightening his embrace.

He knew that once the sun rose tomorrow, she wouldn’t want to see him.

So he could only steal these brief moments of tenderness like a thief in the night.

The next morning, Sophia woke to the smell of antiseptic.

Dorothy tiptoed in carrying a thermos.

The moment she spotted the red marks on Sophia’s neck and collarbone, she gasped. “Oh my god! What happened to your neck? Are those mosquito bites? Even on the VIP floor?” She frowned. “I’ll get you some ointment from the nurse.”

She set down the thermos and hurried out.

Soon, she returned with Connor in tow.

Connor held a tube of ointment, but the moment he stepped into the room, his gaze landed on the glaring red marks on Sophia’s neck.

Hefroze mid-step.

As a man-and more importantly, as a medical professional-he knew exactly what those weren’t mosquito bites.

They were kiss marks.

Burning territorial claims.

Who else could it be but Damian?

Connor’s fingers tightened slightly.

This was Damian’s way of silently declaring ownership, warning him to stay away from his woman.

But what about the bodyguards at the door? How had he gotten

in?

Though questions swirled in his mind, Connor’s expression remained composed as he calmly handed the ointment to Dorothy.

“It’s fine, Dorothy. Just some bites. This ointment should clear them up quickly.”

“This place really needs to step up its pest control.” Dorothy opened the tube and dabbed some ointment on a cotton swab.

As she applied it to the marks, she kept muttering, “Look how

badly they bit Sophia-so many red spots.”

Sophia smiled apologetically, explaining gently: “Dorothy, you can’t blame Connor for this. He doesn’t handle maintenance. My skin is just too sensitive-it turns red if anyone even touches it.”
