Her Divorce, His Downfall (Sophia and Damian) novel Chapter 71

Chapter 71

Before Damian could respond, Isabelle suddenly rushed to Connor, throwing her arms around him as she sobbed an apology:

“Connor, I know my sister died tragically, and you loved her so much-your heart must be breaking. But you can’t blame Damian for this.

“That horrible man kidnapped me. Damian only brought my sister to trade for me because he was trying to save me. It’s all my fault. If you need to blame someone, blame me-just please don’t blame Damian. This really has nothing to do with him.”

The young, beautiful girl collapsed into his arms, and Connor instinctively recoiled in disgust.

Even though she was his fiancée, he couldn’t bear being close to her.

The thought that Isabelle wasn’t content causing drama with him—she had to run to Damian and break Sophia’s heart there too—and that he’d allowed it all to happen, ultimately leading to Sophia’s death, made Connor’s chest tighten until he couldn’t breathe.

Anger building inside him, he pushed Isabelle away, his eyes

ashing with cold fury:

“Who do you think is to blame here? Every time we fought, you couldn’t wait to run to Damian! Again and again, putting on that helpless act in front of him-what was Sophia supposed to think?”

He stepped closer, struggling to contain his rage:

“And I was too busy with work to deal with the rumors about you two. I was too permissive. I kept thinking you were just throwing a tantrum and would get over it in a few days.

“But I forgot how destructive your selfishness could be. The rift between them kept growing, and now-now she’s dead.

“If I’d married you sooner, made you stop pursuing Damian, maybe Sophia would still be alive.”

Being humiliated by Connor in front of Damian was more than Isabelle could bear. She tried to defend herself, but he cut her off sharply:

“Now Sophia is dead! Because of your endless attention-seeking, those misunderstandings broke her heart! Are you satisfied now?”

Connor suddenly laughed-a cold, bitter sound full of sharp hatred:

“This sham of an engagement is meaningless now anyway. The whole thing makes me sick.

“Isabelle, let’s call off the engagement. From now on, chase whoever you want-just stay out of my way.”

With that, Connor slowly stood up. Without another glance at their shocked faces, he stepped around Isabelle and headed for

the door.

Isabelle’s heart skipped a beat, pounding wildly.

She never expected that just as she was considering breaking off the engagement with Connor, he would beat her to it.

A flash of barely concealed excitement crossed her eyes, but with Damian present, she couldn’t show how pleased she

was. That

would make him suspicious.

Isabelle quickly arranged her features into an expression of devastation.

Her delicate brows furrowed as she lunged forward to grab Connor’s sleeve, tears streaming down her face:

“Connor, I know you never loved me-you’ve always loved my sister. I know that.”

She looked up at him through tear-filled eyes, her long lashes4:19

trembling. “But I don’t care. I really don’t. Just being by your side is enough for me.

“But that night when you were drunk, you held me and promised you’d take care of me forever, that you’d be responsible for me. Have you forgotten?

“Now you don’t want me. What will people say? They’ll say I wasn’t good enough compared to my sister, that I deserved to be abandoned.

“But Connor, they’ll also say you’re heartless, that the Wilson family can’t be trusted. I just can’t bear the thought of you being criticized.”

Even now, she couldn’t resist taking another jab at Sophia.

The moment Damian heard “you’ve always loved my sister,” his expression went dark and cold.

If he wasn’t in the wrong this time, he’d love nothing more than to beat Connor senseless-just like years ago when Connor kissed Sophia, and they’d fought until they were both bloody and broken.

But now, he could do nothing.

Damian coldly stated:

“Connor, you can’t cancel the engagement. You need to take responsibility for Isabelle.”

Hearing this, Connor’s barely controlled emotions exploded again.

He spun around, strode forward, and grabbed Damian by the collar, roaring:

“Damian, mind your own business! Who I’m engaged to has nothing to do with you! Sophia’s body isn’t even cold yet, and you’re here worrying about another woman’s engagement. Don’t you think that’s pathetic?”

Still bleeding from the earlier punch, and now Connor was getting physical again.

Even with all his self-control, Damian had reached his limit. Once, twice, three times-Connor kept challenging him. Did he think he was a pushover?

He forcefully pulled Connor’s hands away and straightened his collar, frowning seriously:
