Chapter 8

First day at Peterson Group, the project pitch meeting.

Conference room. Jason, Lucas, and Rose sat across the table.

When I walked in and took the seat next to Ethan, their faces were priceless.

Jason shot up. “Nina? What are you doing here? You quit!”

I straightened my new badge, smiled. “Bad memory, Jason? You forced me out. Now I’m

Peterson Group’s project lead.”

“Your client.”

Lucas’s face soured too. “Nina, don’t mess around. This is business, not your drama

hour. What do you know about strategy? Get out before you embarrass yourself.”

Ethan spoke, spinning a pen, gaze cold. “Lucas, are you telling me how to staff my

company?”

Lucas choked. “Mr. Peterson, no… I just meant Nina…”

“Quiet.” Ethan turned to me, a trace of amusement. “Ms. Mitchell, begin. If their

proposal fails, fail it.’

I opened Rose’s submission.

Two pages in, I closed it. Slid it back across the table.

Thud.

“Trash.” Flat. “Fake data. No logic. Inflated budget. Mr. Mitchell, this is your best?”

Rose paled. Tears welled. “Nina… how can you say that? I stayed up all night working on

it…”

“Don’t call me that.” I stood, locked eyes with her. “And drop the act. This is business, not your backyard. Nobody buys it. You want this account? Redo it. Properly. Or get

out.”

Jason shook with rage. “Nina! This is personal! You’re just jealous of Rose!”

I looked at the brother I once respected.

Now I just pitied him.

“Jealous? Jason, you still don’t get it. I was never jealous of her. Everything she has? I gave it up. The project. The family.”

“And you.”
