Flora came from a wealthy family, with reliable managers running a successful business across the country. Her operations were widespread.
One of her right-hand men, Desmond, the butler, had his second son bring the Violet Balm back from Juashiton.
Flora had casually mentioned that the scar on Vivian’s left cheek was from her protecting Celia, and that always made Flora feel guilty. She had wanted to make it up to Vivian, but the opportunity never arose.
Later, when Desmond’s second son brought the Violet Balm to Aurea Manor, Flora felt compelled to open it out of curiosity, even though she had no practical use for it.
The moment she did, she was struck by a refreshing scent that cleared her head. It was truly special.
However, the familiar balm in front of her had no hint of that aroma. It only smelled like some cheap, generic ointment.
Flora looked at Sylvia, her brow slightly furrowed. “My maid personally delivered this balm to your courtyard, Sylvia. She should have told you to apply it to Vivian’s cheek. Even if it doesn’t completely remove the scar, it should at least help lessen it.”
Sylvia tried to stay calm and responded, “Lady Flora, I wouldn’t dream of ignoring your instructions. As soon as the balm arrived, I gave it to Vivian. Maybe it was just left out too long, so the medicine lost its potency and the scent faded.”
Vivian smiled sweetly, appearing completely innocent. But her words sent a chill down Sylvia’s spine. “Mom, I think it’s not just that the medicine lost its strength. Someone might have switched it out on purpose.”
Sylvia replied, “Vivian, I carried you for months and endured so much to bring you into this world.
“Even if you look down on me for my low status and think I’m holding you back, you could ask Lady Flora to claim you as her daughter. Why do you have to accuse me so harshly?”
Suddenly, Sylvia burst into tears. Everyone present finally understood. ‘It’s no wonder Vivian keeps blaming Sylvia. She wants to stop being seen as the illegitimate daughter. This girl really has big dreams,’ they thought.
Quentin felt the same way. He had always favored Sylvia and now felt even more protective of her. He demanded that Vivian apologize to Sylvia.
“I did nothing wrong. Why should I apologize?” Vivian replied coldly,
“You tried to frame your own mother. That’s wrong,” Quentin said firmly.
“Father, but what if I’m not framing her?” Vivian insisted, stepping closer and meeting Quentin’s intense gaze.
There was a time when Vivian wanted her father to stand up for her and save her from trouble. But he had always been cold and indifferent, punishing her endlessly and making her apologize time and time again.
Vivian lost track of how many days and nights she spent repenting on that hard floor. She only knew her

But Quentin didn’t even consider glancing in her direction. After all, she was just an ugly illegitimate daughter, not worth the noble duke’s time.
His neglect only made Celia and Sylvia more arrogant. They grew even more ruthless, with their schemes. becoming more vicious.
Vivian took a sharp breath. In a swift motion, she grabbed Holly’s wrist, catching everyone by surprise. Holly, the wife of Sylvia’s cousin, was one of her closest allies.
“Vivian, what are you doing?” Sylvia shrieked, her tone sharp like a cat whose tail had just been stepped on.
Holly screamed, “Lady Vivian, please let me go. We can talk this out.”
But Vivian ignored Holly’s protest and pulled her directly over to Flora, dragging her along with force.
“Lady Flora, could you please smell her hand?” Vivian asked calmly.
Flora’s instincts kicked in. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she grabbed Holly’s hand and lifted it to her nose. As she expected, there was a faint scent, the unmistakable fragrance of the Violet Balm.
Vivian then pushed Holly’s hand toward Quentin. “Father, you should smell it, too. It’ll help you avoid wrongly accusing your daughter of being dishonest without knowing the truth.”
Quentin was a battle-hardened warrior with sharp instincts. If Flora caught that scent, there was no way he would miss it.
His expression darkened as a whirlwind of thoughts raced through his mind. The Violet Balm, which Flora had bought at a high price, was now in the hands of a servant.
And it wasn’t just any servant. It was Holly, the wife of Sylvia’s cousin, who was always by her side.
‘Did Holly take it when Sylvia wasn’t looking, or did Sylvia really ignore her own daughter on purpose? No, that can’t be right,’ Quentin thought.
He instinctively dismissed the second possibility. Vivian was their only child, and even if she had her flaws, she was still Sylvia’s flesh and blood.
‘The Violet Balm could help Vivian reduce her scar and might secure her a brighter future, even as an illegitimate daughter. Why would Sylvia part with something so invaluable and give it to a servant? That would be like betraying her own child,’ Quentin thought.
“Holly, how could you swap Lady Vivian’s balm behind her back?” Quentin snapped, barely holding back his anger. To him, that was the only explanation that made sense.
Vivian raised an eyebrow, expecting this reaction from Quentin. After everything she had experienced in her previous life, she was well aware of secrets others didn’t know.
For instance, Sylvia had once nursed Quentin back to health after he was injured. He fell for her instantly, captivated by her kindness and gentle nature.

She was like a soft reed, clinging to Quentin’s solid presence, making him feel strong and capable.
But Sylvia’s low status made it impossible for her to be his wife. So, Quentin kept her hidden in a house outside the Aurea Manor for years, sneaking around without his parents knowing.
It wasn’t until he married Flora that he finally brought Sylvia into his home as a concubine.
Given their history, of course Quentin would defend Sylvia. Blaming Holly was only natural.
Holly fell to her knees, banging her head against the floor. “Your Grace, please show mercy. I didn’t know the Violet Balm was so precious.
“I thought it was just some regular ointment and used it on my hand. If I had realized Lady Flora prepared it for Lady Vivian, I wouldn’t have touched it.”
Hearing Holly’s frantic apologies, Sylvia felt both pity and annoyance. From the beginning, she knew the Violet Balm could help Vivian, but she couldn’t stand the thought of that brat regaining her beauty.
So, she had Holly come over and told her to dispose of the ointment. Whether that meant burning it or tossing it out, she just needed to make sure it never got to Vivian.
But Flora was still the Duchess of Aurea, and Sylvia needed to respect her. After some thought, she told Holly to fill the fancy bottle with regular ointment and give that to Vivian instead.
No one could have anticipated that Holly would be so naive. Believing she could get away with it just because she was in charge, she kept the Violet Balm for herself, and now she was caught red-handed.
Sylvia was sweating bullets, her nerves on edge.
Vivian smiled, knowing Holly was only pretending. Holly was practically glued to Sylvia. There was no way she didn’t know how valuable the balm Flora had spent a fortune to bring back from Juashiton was.
Vivian wasn’t about to let Holly off the hook. She pressed, “If you really didn’t know, then who took the real balm and swapped it for that ordinary salve?”
