Chapter 61

Sylvia said, “Lady Flora, Vivian is my daughter. Of course, I love her, but Charles is the only male heir of the Linden family. He simply lost his head for a moment and wished to marry his cousin. He never caused any real harm.
“Just think of it as a stupid fantasy. Why beat him nearly to death over it?”
Sylvia looked at Flora with tears shimmering in her eyes, her sorrow only making her beauty more striking.
Despite how disheveled she was, her begging voice still sounded soft and pleasant, nothing at all like that of a woman who was already middle–aged.
And that was what always made Quentin obsessed with her.
Besides, she had the bond they shared when they were young and the great favor of having once saved his life. They just made her special in Quentin’s eyes.
However, she never acted spoiled or arrogant because of it. She always behaved with utmost caution and managed domestic affairs with earnest diligence in Aurea Manor.
Recently, when Flora took back control of the household, she went through the records Sylvia had kept and realized they were handled extremely well. Nothing was out of place.
Yet this careful and smart woman treated her own daughter with shocking severity. In contrast, she doted on Celia with painstaking gentleness, flawless in every regard.
Flora just couldn’t understand why Sylvia treated them so differently.
“Sylvia, do you know what was written on that cross?” Flora asked in a gentle voice.
Sylvia shook her head blankly.
Quentin had been gripping the cross tightly from the start, and she wouldn’t dare go up and risk angering him, so naturally, she had never seen the writing upon it.
Quentin snapped, “See for yourself.”
Things had gotten completely out of hand, and Quentin was furious. He hurled the cross right at Sylvia’s face.
Sylvia didn’t dare move. Her fingers shook as she slowly picked up the cross.
When she saw that line, she looked at Charles in astonishment. “How could you call your mistress Cece? Have you completely lost your mind?”
Shame flooded Charles until he could hardly lift his head. “I’m so sorry.”
The face that had once been so refined was now swollen to a dark shade, caked with mud and bloodstains, making his wretchedness beyond description.
However, not a single person in the room felt sorry for him, not even Sylvia.
She clenched her teeth, the veins on the back of her hand bulging with fury. She thought, ‘Charles, you’ve really gone too far this time. How dare you harbor such thoughts about Celia?
‘You had even gone so far as to find a counterfeit who resembled her, keeping the woman by your side and deliberately naming her Cece. You probably even called her that in bed.
Just the thought of it made Sylvia feel sick.

Chapter 61
Every repulsive detail that crossed her mind had surely already occurred to Celia.

Sylvia wanted to kill Charles right then and there, but with all these people around, she could only choke down the hatred. burning in her chest, hide her face, and let out quiet sobs.
System did a quick scan of Celia’s mood and blurted out. “Host, the Cuckoo Child has murder on her mind for Charles.”
Vivian just raised an eyebrow, totally unfazed.
The Cuckoo Child was ruthless by nature, always loving to prey on others and snatch whatever caught her eye. Someone like her only ever thought of herself. Emotions meant nothing to her.
Besides, Charles’s love for her wasn’t worth anything, so of course, Celia didn’t care for it.
She knew that the only reason Celia ever got close to Charles was to make use of his engagement to Vivian and cut Vivian off from everything she cared about, and claim her Fortune.
However, things played out differently this time. With the engagement still unsettled and Charles no longer her fiancé, he was worthless to Celia now.
His so–called love and protection were nothing more than a joke.
Just looking at him made Celia uncomfortable.
Grace and Emily exchanged glances, both wishing they could just disappear.
They’d come to Aurea Manor today to throw Celia a birthday surprise, but instead, they walked right into a scandal that really shouldn’t be aired in public.
If Vivian had been the one caught up in all this, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. After all, she was only a low–status daughter in this family, and whoever she married wouldn’t cause much of a fuss anyway.
Yet Charles kept claiming that he was romantically involved with Vivian while secretly obsessing over Celia. He admitted that he even found a pretty maid as a lookalike for Celia.
If this ever got out, the whole family would be utterly disgraced, and Celia would become the biggest joke in this city.
Grace and Emily had always followed Celia’s lead.
After all, Celia came from a top–tier family, had the best scholars teaching her, and was smart as a whip. Word on the street was that even Xavier had a crush on her.
Therefore, hanging out with someone like Celia always made Grace and Emily proud.
However, if Celia’s name ever got stained, then staying close to her would start to feel pretty uncomfortable.
Celia, catching their strange expressions out of the corner of her eye, wept all the harder.
Seeing her daughter so distraught, Flora couldn’t help but step forward, taking Celia’s hand and giving it a comforting squeeze. “Don’t worry. No one will ever hear a word about what happened today.”
“Mom,” Celia cried, as though grievously wronged, and suddenly threw herself into Flora’s embrace.
She looked over at Vivian, tears brimming in her eyes, though beneath them simmered deep hatred.
She thought, ‘Had Vivian not meddled and insisted on producing evidence to prove her innocence, her marriage to Charles would already be confirmed, and none of this would have touched me.‘
Charles was dragged away by the guards in Aurea Manor.

And this time, Sylvia did not try to stop them.

Charles might be the only male heir left in the Linden family’s branch, but Celia was the one Sylvia truly cared about. She couldn’t stand the thought of her being wronged.
She thought, ‘If Charles were not punished severely, how could Celia’s reputation stay intact?‘
[Celia Snyder’s Fortune Points: 68]
When the System notification chimed, Vivian smiled.
She knew it.
She had known all along that Sylvia and Celia would try to meddle in her marriage, and that the one they favored was none other than Charles.
Therefore, Vivian decided to turn their scheme back on them. She asked Enoch to help find Celine, then feigned complete innocence and followed the plan to the silk shop.
Sure enough, Charles was there waiting.
He thought he was the hunter, but little did he know that he was just someone else’s prey.
Vivian toyed with the pearl bracelet on her wrist. It had been a risk, but the reward was great. She grabbed three Fortune Points back, including one Golden Plume.
“Congratulations. You’ve reclaimed one Golden Plume,” the System chirped, sounding genuinely delighted.
Vivian looked over at Celia, who was nestled in Flora’s embrace. They seemed very close.
The cuckoo spirit still hovered above Celia’s head, but its tail feathers dwindled from seven to six. Its presence had weakened, and it glanced about warily, as if terrified that another feather might be stolen.
Vivian had never seen a thief so shameless.
Celia had stolen what was never hers, yet over time, she’d forgotten that fact entirely, mistaking herself for the rightful
owner.
Neither the Fortune upon her nor the precious Golden Plume belonged to her.
And sooner or later, it was all going back where it belonged.
