Chapter 62

Flora held Celia in her arms and kept gently comforting her.

Sylvia just collapsed there, staring blankly.

Junia stepped forward, helped her up, and said softly. Please get up. You’ll catch a chill.”

Sylvia snapped out of it, wiped the corners of her eyes with a handkerchief, brushed off the dust, and then walked up to Flora, bowing gracefully.

She said, Lady Flora, I never would have thought that bastard would dare approach Lady Celia. From now on, I swear I won’t let him set foot in Aurea Manor again. Please show mercy and spare his life.

Flora looked at Sylvia, carefully studying her expression.

She thought, Sylvia really seems serious, her eyes showing real disgust. It’s obvious that she doesn’t want Charles to tarnish Celia’s reputation.

What about Vivian? Vivian is Sylvia’s daughter, and no matter what happened, that bond couldn’t be broken. Why would she ever agree to let her daughter marry a guy like him?”

Flora just couldn’t wrap her head around it.

She said, Charles ruined Vivian’s reputation, so he needs a proper beating, but his concubine is six months pregnant. Being too harsh on her might hurt the baby. Just let her go.

Celia wasn’t satisfied with this. She hesitated for a long moment, but couldn’t get a single complete sentence out.

She didn’t want to let Celine off the hook. The thought that there existed a woman who bore a striking resemblance to her, bending every way to please, filled her with deep humiliation.

She believed that she was meant to be the queen someday.

However, she couldn’t say that out loud; it would just make her sound vicious.

She looked around the courtyard, and finally, her eyes landed on Luna.

Celia sniffled quietly, tears streaming down her face.

Being a woman and a sister, Luna understood why Celia cried.

She frowned and said, Aunt Flora, this isn’t right. Celine is just a lowborn maid. It’d be better to kick her out than have her hanging around.

Flora frowned deeply.

Sylvia quickly stepped in to stop her. Miss Archer, Charles is our precious heir, and Celine is carrying his child. I can’t kick her out right now.

Luna always despised Sylvia, seeing her as unruly and reckless, taking advantage of her occasional sway before Quentin. She believed such insolence demanded a lesson.

Therefore, she sneered. The Linden family is nothing. I want Celine under my charge. Do they really think they can say

no?

She thought, Even the Snyder family has to show respect to the Archer family. What is the Linden family in comparison?

Sylvia gritted her teeth and replied, You’re right.”

Honestly, Sylvia couldn’t stand Celine either. Her face resembled Celia’s far too closely. Even if they weren’t mistaken for each other, it still made her uncomfortable.

She pondered how to get Celine back if Luna really tried to interfere.

She thought. Once Celine delivered the child, it didn’t matter whether she lived or died. I could not allow Celia to carry

resentment over a mere servant.

However, Flora wasn’t about to let Luna act without restraint.

She said, Luna, this is our family business. You should leave with Miss Sterling and Miss Shaw. Come visit Celia next time.

Hearing this, Grace and Emily felt awkward.

They were nobleborn young ladies, schooled in every gesture and word by the palace itself. This was the first time they’d ever been flatout told to leave someone’s house.

Luna bit down hard on her tongue, her mouth filling with the taste of blood.

She thought, Why is Aunt Flora doing this? She shielded Vivian just now and then stepped in for Celine, who happened to resemble Celia. She’s always siding with outsiders. Seriously, what is so great about Vivian?

If Vivian hadn’t caused such a scene trying to prove her innocence, Celia wouldn’t be stuck in this embarrassing mess. She wouldn’t be lusted after by Vivian’s cousin.

Very well, I suppose I’ve meddled too much,” Luna muttered. She walked off, with Grace and Emily following closely behind.

Vivian turned around and saw Nina lurking at the back of the group, and she couldn’t help but chuckle.

After all, Nina was normally quick to flare up, but she was oddly silent just now.

That just made Vivian notice that something was off.”

She thought, Nina is acting so weird because she’s feeling anxious. She’d been trying to suck up to Celia, so she informed Luna and the other girls and even brought them straight to Hearthstone Court, but she never thought she’d see all this chaos.’

At least Nina wasn’t totally clueless. She realized that if she said anything now, Quentin’s family would totally hate her for it, so she kept her mouth shut.

There was supposed to be a birthday celebration for Celia, but after all that chaos, Flora scrapped the whole thing.

Everyone left in silence.

Vivian purposely hung back a bit and walked up to Nina.

Nina was only fifteen, full of youthful energy, and her feelings were all over her face.

guts

If her father hadn’t gambled away everything their family owned, leaving them with nothing, Nina wouldn’t be trailing after Celia every day, hoping to snag herself a better future.

She was just too naive, and the way she tried to please others was clumsy. A single misstep could cost her dearly.

Nina,” Vivian called out to her.

What do you want?Nina was visibly guarded, her whole face wary.

Chapter 62

As Vivian drew closer, she noticed a light, pleasant scent, not like makeup or perfume.

She said, I heard that Uncle Henry picked up a few pills from some foreign merchants, said to repel pests. Could you give me one?

Nina didn’t hesitate. She took a fingernailsized pill out of her pocket and handed it straight to Vivian.

Then she boltedoff, not wanting to stick around any longer.

The pill was light in color, just slightly bigger than a fingernail, with a faint rosin scent. It was popular in Aurestus and fairly expensive, purchased exclusively by nobles and highranking officials.

Somehow, Vivian couldn’t shake the feeling that this fragrant pill was hiding something more than it seemed.

Once back at Maple Yard, she grabbed a knife and sliced the pill open. An overpowering aroma burst forth, choking her and forcing her to retch uncontrollably.

Host. Are you okay?System blurted out, sounding anxious.

Vivian’s mind went completely blank.

She bit down on her tongue to force herself awake, then stumbled out of the bedroom. A splash of cold water on her face finally eased the storm raging in her stomach.

She thought, There’s definitely something off about this pill.

Normally, the powder inside was sealed with wax, so people only smelled rosin, but if the wax broke and the powder leaked, it could cause hallucinations.

I’m fine,Vivian panted heavily, her breath gradually returning to normal after a long moment.

She explained, Back in my previous life, just before His Highness was confined, everyone said he’d lost his mind and wasn’t fit to be the crown prince. However, General Fletcher didn’t believe it and even broke orders to visit him..

He saw His Highness, who had always been so composed, with eyes red as fire, swinging a sword wildly at anything in sight. If the guards hadn’t thrown themselves in front of General Fletcher, he might have ended up accused of killing his own uncle.

Vivian frowned, a hint of compassion showing in her eyes.

She realized that Enoch was just like her. They both suffered at the hands of family, caught in deadly conflicts between kin.

The System was puzzled. But what does his losing his mind have to do with that pill?
