"Since arriving here, I have come across quite a bit of news.
"That "first love" Gilbert had been hung up on for years—turns out she was some twisted woman who'd done awful things. Someone everybody feared and knew better than to cross. After Caleb died, she got scared and slipped back home, then found some poor guy to take the fall."
Plenty of people assumed she'd returned for a reason.
Some figured it was because she was originally from Virelia.
A few sharp ones guessed she was back to marry Lucas.
But no one had managed to piece together the real story.
Truth was, she was terrified that everyone she'd wronged would lose it and come after her. Over there, plenty of things weren't exactly illegal—taking her out wouldn't have been hard.
And of all people, that witch Sherry had to be the one to put it together.
"So what am I supposed to tell Gilbert about all the bad press you've racked up?"
By now, Julia wasn't just worried about Gilbert anymore.
You could say that finding that man was her ticket out. She was deathly afraid Sherry would let something slip.
Everything else came second.
Sure, giving up on Gilbert would sting. But she absolutely couldn't let Sherry get the upper hand.
No—not a chance.
She had to keep her cool. Sherry couldn't hold anything over her.
The Whites had seen that steadiness in her, and that was why they agreed to help.
Julia's forehead was damp with sweat. It was clear she was rattled.
"And what about Caleb? Your husband's death seemed pretty shady, don't you think?"
That one line shattered whatever composure she had left.
"Don't talk trash! You're just jealous my husband treated me right and yours treated you like dirt! Caleb and I were fine. He died protecting me—plenty of people saw it. Don't you start spreading lies."
Sherry listened to the idiot making excuses.
She'd only brought it up because she couldn't figure why someone that young would die so suddenly.
But Julia's reaction was honestly a bit surprising.
"Let me tell you something—if you dare say a word to that mystery guy, I swear I'll ruin your life."
Mystery guy??
Sherry glanced at Lucas beside her, totally lost.
Then she hung up.
Julia kept saying, "Hello? Hello?" but all she got was the dial tone.
Panicking, she called back right away, only to realize it was from a payphone. What year was it? Who even used payphones anymore?
